Decided to go with this name because just calling it "Animals" felt too bland.

No, these aren't the Freedom Fighters.  But the Freedom Fighters, both from Fleetway and Archie, were based off the animals trapped inside Badniks and Capsules.

Sally Acorn - She is based off Ricky (squirrel).  In the west, he was turned female, given a pink bow, and renamed "Sally Acorn."

Johnny Lightfoot - He is based off Pocky (rabbit).  In the west, he was renamed "Johnny Lightfoot."

Porker Lewis - He is based off Picky (pig).  In the west, he was renamed "Porker Lewis."

Joe Sushi - He is based off Rocky (seal).  In the west, he was renamed "Joe Sushi."

If we had a Sonic the Hedgehog 90s cartoon with a more faithful adaptation of the video games, I can imagine the animal friends being children.  And the children would look up to the heroes Sonic, Amy, Tails, and Knuckles.
