He's Eriq's cousin, his father is Eriq's Mom's brother whom Eriq is named after
when Avery was vary young, his father came out as gay, this ended up destroying his marrige and led to him basically disappearing, presumed dead

while it's a big question he has as well, the simple answer is the same as him, he just didn't know, they loved each other, but he never really felt sexually atracted to her
