I try to avoid that when I can. Things that happen relatively close to that time period might appear, but things 5-10 years later won't.

In the case of his cell phone, it's a work phone, and rates were VERY expensive at the time.

I was just teasing. Honestly, putting that much thought into the worldbuilding is awesome, even if it's something that almost nobody will notice, or realize was deliberate. It speaks to the DM in me.
