A lone police cruiser slowly rolled its wheels down the street, as the moon sat above in a crescent shape, while the streetlights beamed their lights brightly or flickered dimly from above.

“You think we’ll see him tonight?” One of two officers— a Möbian buck— spoke, as he sat shotgun in the car.

“Well, from what I hear, he’s active every night. So, chances are that someone’s gonna spot him; he’s a cocky one too, from what I understand, so I doubt he’ll do his best to hide.” His partner— a brown Möbian wolf— responded, as he continued driving down the road.

As a result of Katorasu’s stunt from the night before, the Station Square Police Department was pressured into upping their nightly patrols, in a response to the vigilante becoming rather brave with his actions. Each officer had to sacrifice some of their time, to have a chance at chasing down this new troublesome hero; unless they wanted GUN to step in, this is what they had to do.

“Yeah, but what I mean is that do you think *we’ll* see him, Joey?” The male deer clarified.

His coworker mulled the question over for a bit, “Honestly, Sal? I doubt it, there’s that small chance but I doubt we’re the ones who get to make that call to the others.”

“You think he hates cops?” The buck asked as he took a look out the window.

“Maybe not hate, but I don’t think he’d like us very much for trying to arrest him. He knows he’s breaking the law though, maybe he also knows that we’re just doing our job,” He responded, with full honesty. A small chuckle came from Joey soon, as he joked, “What? You afraid of him?”

“What?” The buck rolled his eyes, “Of course not, man; I’ve seen how the guys in the cells only have a couple of bruises on ‘em, I’m not scared of some guy who holds back for criminals.”

“We’re lucky he holds back, you know that right? Otherwise, there’d be people coming into the hospital, talking about this black hedgehog; it could be even worse than that.” His wolf friend pointed out, as he kept on driving while surveying the area ahead.

“Never thought about it like that… still, if they’re not gonna tell anyone, *he’s* probably gonna tell the whole city soon enough. Showoff.” The buck scoffed, as he realized that his partner had parked in front of a donut shop, “Seriously? You’re not helping the stereotype.” Sal had turned to his mate.

Already, the driver was opening up his side of the car, “You can either come with me and get donuts or stay in the car, like a kid, without getting any.” Joey chuckled as he stepped out of the vehicle and onto the pavement, getting a nice shot of fresh air in his lungs.

A late-night snack, or a dozen at the least, did sound great for a patrol that wouldn’t be ending until an hour or so later. Getting out of his side of their cruiser, Sal followed his partner, who was already up ahead and approaching the neon-signed donut shop.

As the pair stepped up over the curb, another duo of men had walked out of the small building before the officers. Their outfits were fine and dapper, with darker colors that could only be distinguished by the light of the shop behind them; the tops of their heads were adorned by older fashionable hats, yet they seemed so new and clean.

“Hope you’re having a fine night, officers.” One of the duos had tipped his hat in passing to the cops, as they both started to walk away, down the sidewalk, from the boys in the blue.

Sal, noticing a few things about the well-dressed pair, leaned in towards his fellow officer, “Who steps out without getting a donut?”

“Not only that but those outfits…” Joey trailed off, watching how the pair had started talking to each other after a fair distance had been made between them and the cops.

While not ignoring them entirely, Sal and Joey entered the donut shop and both had immediately noticed that the current cashier looked a little on edge.

The buck leaned towards his partner again, “You thinking what I’m thinking?”

Joey, who simply nodded in response at first, told his partner to hold on for a moment, “Let’s ask first, then we’ll go check them out.”

All around the cops, as they moved, the shop was adorned in white and pink tiles that bounced the light in the ceiling off of them.

The cashier was a somewhat older woman, who only gave a nervous and soft smile as she welcomed them, “Hey there! What can I get you officers tonight?”

Cutting right to the chase, Sal placed a hand on the counter before them and leaned forward a bit, “Those two guys that just left, were they causing trouble?”

Joey, who already knew what she would most likely ask in response, kept an eye on the door they had just come through. Just in case anyone tried to peek in and listen.

Letting out a tired sigh, the cashier began to explain, “I don’t know who or what they’re a part of, but they came in offering their ‘protection services.’ They kept talking about how with all the gangs in the area, our store just isn’t safe enough. I told them what everybody else knows: they’re just dumb rebellious kids who wouldn’t hurt anyone.”

“What’d they tell you?” The buck asked, his voice became rather calm and soothing.

“That sooner or later, we’d regret not hiring them.” She explained, almost holding her breath as she told the officers.

Sal nodded his head, before pulling away from the counter; from there, he moved over to his partner, “Let’s see if we can’t catch up with those guys, they tried to shake down this place.”

“Think they’re with the guys we tossed in the cells last night?” Joey asked, calmly stepping out of the shop while trying to not raise suspicion in case the dapper pair were outside, watching.

“One way to find out, Joey,” Sal had stepped out of the donut shop with his partner, before noticing that someone was indeed peering at them from an alleyway just down the sidewalk; though the individual pulled back from the corner.

Nudging his wolf coworker to follow him, the twosome proceeded to quickly move towards the opening between buildings. Both were ready for a fast tussle— after all, it did come with the job— as they stood just before an empty alleyway that opened up to a small concrete area. Keeping their breath steady, especially in a dark area like this, the two slowly hovered their hands over the grips of their batons, as they prepared for a form of confrontation.

Without warning, the buck and the wolf felt a hard blow against their backs that sent them onto the floor, followed by simultaneous thumps as they landed roughly on their chests. Their police caps were knocked onto the floor as they fell.

“Always sticking your nose in where you shouldn’t, we weren’t even causing any harm.” One of the gentlemen from earlier had stepped out from behind, dropping a discarded pipe onto the floor.

“Yeah, we were just trying to help, just like you guys.” The other snickered, prodding Sal with the 2x4 he had beat him with.

“I mean, we might be even better, after all, we did just make two cops look like complete idiots,” He shook his head, before clapping his hands once, “Boys? Let’s show what happens to cops who try to get in our way of protectin’ this city.”

Like feral vultures, other mobsters had stepped out from their places as they descended upon the pair of cops. In an unrelenting assault, they began to kick at the sides of the buck and the canine, the two tried their best to get past the blows and get back up but it was impossible for them.

In one moment though, the pain had quickly stopped— though the stinging remained— their attackers were launched a fair bit away from them both. Some outside force had intervened swiftly.

“C’mon, let’s get you two back up,” a chipper voice spoke, as the cops felt themselves being helped up onto their feet by an unknown person.

To their surprise, it was the cocky vigilante that their department had been trying to get their hands on for months by now: Katorasu Naitosutōka. As if all three of them were good friends, the nephalem had happily picked up their caps from the ground and dusted them both off quickly.

“I know we’re not on good terms, but that doesn’t mean we can’t kick some ass together,” He handed Joey and Sal their issued headwear, both of them taking quick confused glances at each other as they donned their police caps.

Before showing up, the black hedgehog had happened to overhear the commotion and didn’t hesitate to hop on down and help out the cops; despite how both sides had problems with each other, Katorasu knew that they were the good guys as well, with their own rules and all that.

While the officers only knew the basics in bare-knuckle brawling, Katorasu himself combined his agility with his knowledge of fighting. With each of his movements, there was this sense of casualness as the Nephalem fought; despite how he drew most of the aggro from the group that he and officers were fighting against.

He was able to shift his attention so fast— from avoiding a quick jab at his side with a knife, to blocking an overhead strike with a crowbar— that it didn’t matter to him that there were a total of six men all around him. Even when one of them attempted to football tackle the black hedgehog, he quickly directed them into another mobster.

Meanwhile, Joey and Sal were handling only one member of the gang for each of them. The buck currently had dodged a blow to his cheek, before sucker-punching his opponent, making them stumble over onto a garbage can and losing their hat in the process; the wolf on the other hand had managed to get his mobster onto the ground, before quickly handcuffing their hands together behind their back as they laid on the floor still conscious.

The vigilante continued to have fun with his portion of the gang, as he quickly hopped into the air high enough to perform a spinning kick that struck the faces of the four men that surrounded him. Immediately after landing, he effortlessly leg swept the closest mobster to him and dropped them roughly onto their back. Before he could figure out how to knock out this one, another mobster had approached from behind him to try and get in a hit.

“That’ll work,” He said with a cocky smirk, turning around and rapidly lifting the mobster behind him, “Up and over!” He announced, dropping them onto his fellow mobster that was on the floor.

Wasting no time, Katorasu quickly turned towards another dapper gentleman as he cracked his knuckles nonchalantly while keeping that grin on his face as per usual. Moving to the side, watching as a fist whizzed past his face, the nephalem quickly began to deliver a flurry of light blows to the chest of the mobster, capping it all off with a side kick to the body of the member; he had practically sent that one flying across the floor.

As all that was happening, Joey and Sal had handcuffed their second mobster of the night— which by no means did it take a long time with the two of them together, as the nephalem just moved pretty quickly— before heading over to the Nephalem to see if they could lend some assistance.

What they saw though was a series of men all unconscious, with some even on top of one another. As Katorasu took a casual stance, he looked at the last mobster standing, who seemed to be ready to try and fight him, despite the slim odds.

“So, a hero and two cops versus one crook; I like my chances but I’m not so sure about yours,” He remarked, his voice perfectly conveying his jokester attitude, “How about this? We let you leave, then you go run along to your boss and tell them that they better start getting ready, because I’m only playing games for a few more nights before I start getting into your little warehouses and start breaking shit. Capiche?” A little bastard would be the perfect description of Katorasu right now.

Hesitant to accept the hedgehog's offer, the last standing mobster lowered his fists and glanced around the area; realizing that his chances were practically zero, he nodded his head before taking a quick leave from the alleyway.

“Huh, didn’t think I could ever be taken seriously,” He mused, after watching them turn tail and scamper off to wherever they had in mind, Katorasu soon turned towards the duo of cops, “You guys alright? I showed up as soon as I heard all the ruckus.” Surprisingly, that was a genuine question coming from the self-proclaimed hero.

“We’re alright, thanks for the assist,” Sal responded, placing a hand on his side, though he pulled away when he felt how sore he was.

An awkward silence fell over between the cops and the vigilante, it took Katorasu to break it, “So, you gonna arrest me?”

“Well, considering how you didn’t let us get dogpiled on some more by those criminals,” Joey rubbed the back of his neck as he spoke, “I’m alright with letting you go, for now.”

Pulling his canine friend to the side, Sal talked to him in a hushed tone, “Are you sure about this? We might get in serious trouble for letting him leave.”

“You saw how easily he took on all those guys, you think we even have a chance to slap cuffs on him? Plus, he has that annoying cloud ability,” His partner reasoned.

Agreeing, the pair turned back towards the black hedgehog, “We’re gonna have to call this in to the station still, but we’ll leave you out of the details,” Joey explained.

“Cool, I’m fine with you two taking all the credit; you guys could use the morale boost.” He flashed another toothy smile, it was all in good fun though.

“Right… well, again, thank you for the assistance; don’t think that because of this we’ll let you off next time if there is one.” The buck crossed his arms, despite how sore it felt to move them in such a manner.

“Figured as much, not that I’m complaining; still though, I’m always happy to lend a hand.” His response was rather chipper.

After both sides had said their farewells and good nights, the nephalem swiftly took to the rooftops again with his mist form. In his head, as he flipped from rooftop to rooftop, he figured another hour or two of patrol and that would be the end of his night. Despite never getting sleepy, Katorasu always loved to just relax and rest in a bed underneath a warm blanket. That would be waiting for him at the end of the night, of which nothing of noteworthiness happened. Seemed like it was an actual routine for the black hedgehog.
