Could be a current in the ocean/river pulled out of them out first and the other two followed in to help, only to succumb from fatigue in the water as well.
Could easily see Nick being the first victim, entering the water with a cool swagger only to end up unable to swim back to the shore, stuck in the current as fear takes over and he starts to yell and yelp for help as he started drowning, thrashing his paws about, cock bouncing around in that nice green speedo of his as he starts to spit and cough out water. Bet he floated real nice on the surface as well, orange fur make it easy to find his body.
Haida easily could have just been a weak swimmer, only used to pools, but not the open water, maybe he was just sunbaking or walking, no intention of swimming that day, but found himself slipping under the surface far quicker than he expected, assuming he'd be okay and only realizing as it was too late that he wasn't as strong as he thought he was.
Likewise Tadatomo could have been in full panic, not knowing how to escape the currents and in his fear used all his energy and sunk like as stone.
