Waste not want not in many old sci fi storys food was one of those extreamly valuable things right up there with oxygen, water and radiation shielding.

Yeah, it all depends on what tech-level the scifi is at. My favorite is a mix of old and new, where they still have synthesizer type things that can make pretty much any food, but the synthesizers need some kind of nutrient paste or similar as a starting point. It keeps the food supply as a motive while still showing a lot of progress.
