radiation doesn't 'show up' on the skin. You only see such things when it's evolved into an advanced/aggressive stage of cancer. You can see the quest is clearly 'shoes' they're going through a desert, full of coarse sand and hard rocks. It's gonna be murder on a bare foot for something not built for the terrain. Shoes were made to solve that issue.
