Unsent Letters: Morning

  “We found this among his things. It seems like the only thing he left behind. It’s a letter, addressed to you…” The young paladin opened the letter, holding back the tears as he read.

  Have you ever wondered what it would have been like if we were allowed to be together, Luca? I do sometimes. Maybe my outlook is just ruined by now. But I doubt there is a single chance we would have stayed together. Perhaps we could have left on better terms.

  I hate you, Luca. I hate you and I’ll never forgive you. But also, I still love you. It might sound strange but that’s how it has always been, it’s how I was with my mother too. I cling to the people that hurt me because I’m scared of the alternative. Well, I guess I get to see that alternative now.

  There’s a dark part of me that feels like I should be happy now that my mother is dead. That it’s payback for all the ways she mistreated me. But revenge is stupid, I don’t feel any better and I’m left empty and alone. That’s why I’m not sending this letter, you’ve suffered enough, Luca.

  The counsellors here tell me to hold strong, that some day I’ll wake up and see the morning. It’s stupid. Do they really expect that one day I’ll wake up and a lifetime of suffering will be undone? Well it’s fine. I’m not waking up, and I’ll never see the morning again.
