This is a more recent AU I am trying to go with, in which I have a really odd pairing in my mine that I like which is Chaos n Scourge (Ajax in this realm)

In this au Scourge had come to Angel island intending to fight Blue n his team after they return from a fight with eggman, only for things to go south. An unknown enemy from Scourge's realm, a naga of sorts, came with the intent of destroying the master emerald for good. In such interfered with Green's plan to fight the others, so he ended up in a form of struggle against the intruder. The only drawback to this was the emerald was shattered n scattered across the world, all but a few shards when the serpent retreated. Knuckles being the first back having sensed the power struggle n had seen the conflict between the snake n the hedgehog, eventually found Scourge layning nearby after the explosion of both shards n energy.

Three or four shards lay where the M.E. last stood but the thing that really drew the echidna's worry was the fragment that had been lodged in Scourge/Ajax's neck. Being the only thing keeping the hog alive at the moment the guardian was forced to leave it there n get green over to Tails to find out if they could get it removed safely. They would find it had taken root, binding the fragments energy to Scourge's own, making it too risky to remove without compromising the hedgehog's health.

As time would go on, the fragment would grow, Scarring the hedgehog with the idea that it could eventually end his career. Though thanks to discovering a secret with the fragment now apart of him, he was able to read texts that the ancient echidnas had written. Eventually following these details, found that Chaos once had a anthro form, a dragon, that was lost in his rage n went perfect chaos. A crystal was needed to restore that lost state for the aquatic creature, n in turn with regaining said form Chaos was able to stall the growth of the shard.
