Well, you did say "just kidding" in one of the previous pages when you said "And he never saw her again"

The question became when would she rear her head again...

Little surprised that given the police were able to obtain her contact from leto's computer that he is still able to contact her. I would have assumed once the police were on to her they would have at least gotten her accounts shut down if they were unable to arrest her for whatever reason.

Based on Leto's computer having a CRT monitor and his phone being an old school flip phone, I'm guessing this story takes place back in the late 90's or early 2000's before the erosion of privacy on the internet when everyone wasn't tracked and traced on their devices. Just having Reth's username probably wouldn't have been enough for the police to track her down and arrest her back then or get her account shut down. It was a really different world back then.

In the library, they have flat screen computers. Leto is behind on technology. Having someone's username now isn't enough to have police find you by IP address (especially if you have a VPN that's not in the Nine Eyes/SSEUR agreement.

Ohhh, that makes total sense! His living situation isn't the greatest so it's no surprise that he wouldn't have the latest and greatest technology. Thanks for clarifying =)

I can understand being unable to arrest her but is there nothing they can do to keep the victim from having a way to get in contact with the predator?

In the early 2000s, not so much. Even nowadays, not so much. Nowadays... typically the same. I've known over 20 people just myself who were subjected to grooming in that manner, or worse, by people in the furry community; many of are well known and have a sizeable fanbase. The reason a lot of them get away with it is the same reason that the police don't generally take action - the victims are convinced that the predator is their friend. Without the victim giving the police information on their abuser, the police are left with very little to do apart from gather the information that they can - but they tend not to push for an arrest unless they know that they can get a conviction. For a lot of law enforcement agencies, that simply isn't worth their time or effort; predators make a lot of disposable accounts and there's no worldwide organisation to work around jurisdictional limitations. Quite frankly, unless a predator is either an easy catch, police generally don't care.
That's sickening, but no more sickening than how quickly furries will rush to defend or turn a blind eye to known child sex abusers in the community.

I'm gonna dive off the platform for a second here because I relate to this comic hard, and I'm checking daily to see what is going to happen. I was underage when I first found the furry fandom, escaped through roleplay while underage when my parents were fighting, and have seen the legal side of this story when a member of my own family turned out to be a predator (I was not the victim).

My father was convicted of the exact charge that the antagonist would have gotten if she'd been caught. He only served ONE YEAR in jail. He had 5 years of probation, during which he wasn't allowed access to the internet (but I recall him using other peoples' devices to email us and such).

The point I'm getting to is that even if she had been caught, it's very plausible that she would be free and back to her predatory habits by this point, considering that she says it has been years since they've spoken.

It's a real problem with the criminal justice system. Even when children are involved rapists get shockingly short sentences.

My flip phone wasn't nearly as advanced as Leto's... Sure I could sure the web, but a lot of sites didn't work right or were broken.if it wasn't to look up weather or news articles. Streaming video? Out of the question. XD

The aura of impending doom that exudes from this comic is palpable. We got to take a sigh of relief when it looked like Reth had been exposed. But, with the introduction of the troubled friend and Reth back in the picture, we're marching toward something horrific once more.

And my stomach drops again seeing Reth. I was afraid she wouldn't get arrested...
Makes me a little glad i was already out of HS by 2001 and my poverty kept me from getting my very first computer till 2011.
