per suggestion of a friend of mine. It did seem like it was fitting for a redraw haha And gosh it got a glow up, in my opinion!
It's been a while since I've drawn melody, and haven't really thought about Cora since that old pic. But it was always one I was very happy with. Even if the spirl eye experiment didn't really work out well haha. I just like being creative with things. I love looking back and forth between the two versions and seeing all the stuff I needed to improve XD
Like, look at the cut out, needlessly taking up space that has nothing in it, and even cutting off part of the character who's supposed to be in the shot! And and look at how the path just like, disappears into a random void! XD It's literally just disappearing into a black vortex. Honestly at the time I couldn't figure out how to make the background fading away behind her, not how to actully do the background or the path she's standing on and make it look good. But the answer was in me all along and I just didn't want to admit it ...... effort XD Though in fairness I do like, once you break it all down it looks so simple and unappealing, just a path, two bushes, two trees and a void it's all being sucked into, but at a glance it totally conveys the feeling of being in a forest haha.
Still, we can do better, right? I felt there shouldn't' be a path like that in the forest, so I replaced it with a mud trail between the shrubbery, really wanted to make the environment feel dense and wild. Secondly, it doesn't have to disappear into a literal black vortex, but it disappears into the void... of the MIIIND! Drifting slightly out of colour and out of focus means you're mentally ignoring everything back there. Second, a cut-out more appropriately using space, with a backing that frames the character better, and I even managed to pose Cora in a way that works with the curve of the cut-out. Increase the feeling in the swoop of the tail, really make it feel like a spiral coming down, so you can totally imagine it swooshing around her in one fell swoop. I made Melody's pose feel less static too. Though HONESTLY, the pose matching the original other than the arms and tail being less stiff, that was a complete accident XD Her left foot is slightly further than the right and her left ear is raised while the right is dipped back a little. These were complete coincidences that I was delihted to see were still the case in the original XD Cus I wasn't looing at it for reference during that part.
Overall I'm very happy with this redraw. The original was from 13th November 2009. So 11 years ago! Thank you all for sticking with me!
