Pokémon Soaring Earth chapter 4

Dear diary:

Today is the day. Lucian, Drake and I cleaned ourselves to be presentable in the Gym battle. We left the pokémon center and went to the Gym… out of that Lucian’s feelings towards me… what should I do?

Draco smiled and looked at the Gym. It was time. He gave the first step to the stair that would lead him to the doors and then he walked up the way decided to win the battle. He reached the door of the pokémon gym and… it was closed!

“No way!” roared Draco “She said today!”

“Easy, maybe they’re not opened yet” Lucian tried to calm Draco.

“It’s noon!” said the wolgon “They should be open since the morning!”

“Who’s there?” asked someone from the inside of the Gym.

“Um… hello? My name is Draco, I helped Sandra yesterday rescue her pokémon and…” started Draco.

“Oh! Draco, right!” said the fur from inside and opening the door he smiled. It was a siamese cat “Sandra said you’d come but she had other plans. She asked me to tell you that she will be waiting in the forest right at the entrance of the city. Near a river or something like that.”

“The forest?” asked Lucian “Then why didn’t she told us?”

“I don’t know…” said the cat a bit surprised for Lucian’s abilities “She just told me to pass you the message.”

“Ok, thanks anyway” said Draco and he started to walk to the forest. Curious they cleaned that same morning and now they were going to get dirty again and all covered in soil since the forest was all patched with it.

They went all the way to the exit of Olmec City and when they passed the arc Sandra was waiting for them.

“Good day Draco!” she smiled “Sorry for not told you earlier but I decided to camp with Alakazam and my other friends. They are playing by the river now.”

“Well, It’d have come in handy to know that the Gym would be closed… why you accepted my challenge for today then?” asked Draco “If you had told me I’d gladly have waited.”

“Nah! It’s ok, we will have our Gym Battle today, but for now let’s have some fun” smiled Sandra “I just retrieved my dear Alakazam and I want to celebrate!”

“Well, that’s understandable” giggled Draco “I’d do the same if I had passed for what you have with Lucian or Drake.”

C’mon, let’s go meet the others” said Sandra walking to the river.

They followed the path and after a few minutes, Draco saw Sandra’s party. First a huge Metang that was levitating around an Abra and Alakazam. Then, they saw in the water a Starmie and finally a Sygilyph soaring over them.

“Wow! That’s a nice psychic pokémon party!” wondered Draco.

“Well, yes it’s hehe, when I started my journey long ago with Abra It was hard for me because she only knew teleport and used to escape hiding behind me on each battle” admitted Sandra giggling.

“Just like this little boy used to do” smiled Lucian pointing at Drake with the head, causing the dragon pokémon to screech in disgust “Oh! Admit it… you were way scared the first time we fought.”

Drake blushed and admitted defeat about that.

“Haha don’t be so mean Lucian… C’mon Drake, why don’t you join them and play a bit?” said Draco and Drake happily obeyed.

Lucian looked at Draco and no words were needed. The Lucario went to the shade of a three and sat there enjoying the breeze.

“So, how are things going?” asked Sandra “Had a nice night of rest?”

“To be honest, I barely slept” said Draco rubbing the back of his head “I was so nervous about the battle and all…”

“I know. The same happened to me right before my first Gym battle” said Sandra “It’s never easy to confront an opponent that you suppose is stronger than you. And less when you have to prove to him that you are worthy of his approval.”

“Well, I know but I just…” started Draco but he didn’t wanted to discuss the events that occurred with Lucian last night.

“Of course, after what I saw back in the Gym yesterday, I was tempted to give you the badge in that precise moment” said Sandra looking at the sky.

“What? You mean you were tempted to do that?! Why?!” reproached Draco.

“Well, the way you helped me, and of course, the way you fought your way against Team Chaos was outstanding. Even you blocked the way to me when I was helping Alakazam. And Lucian even received an attack directed to us.”

“Well, thanks but that’s just what anyone would do” blushed Draco.

“Not anyone would do that” shook her head Sandra “You have something special kid” hearing that Lucian half opened one eye and looked at the gym leader. She noticed it too. Maybe she indeed had some psychic powers.

“Why you say that?” asked Draco.

“Well, I don’t know… I just have this particular ‘feeling’ when I’m talking to you” shrugged Sandra. But enough of that! We have to eat! It’s past noon and we deserve a good picnic!” Sandra went to where was a huge box and unpacked a sheet with psychic designs, plates, juice, berries, pokémon food, some sandwiches and cupcakes “Today’s my treat.”

“Wait why are you doing this?” asked Draco.

“You helped me before…” said Sandra “I don’t know what would be of me if I lose Alakazam. She’s my first pokémon… my best friend among my best friends.”

“I understand” smiled Draco.

“C’mon, don’t be shy, just eat something” said Sandra.

Draco nodded and took a sandwich while the pokémon, included his, went to them and started to eat too. Sandra placed the pokémon food in plates and gave it to their pokémon. She also gave some to Drake and Lucian. Drake took it but Lucian politely declined.

“Huh? Don’t you want some?” asked Sandra surprised.

“Lucian is more used to eat human food than pokémon food” said Draco “I bought some for him in case it was necessary, but we are giving it to Drake since he just love it.”

“I understand” nodded Sandra “Then have a seat Lucian, take a sandwich and enjoy the food.”

Lucian thanked again in a polite way and took a sandwich. Draco ate his at the same peace than Lucian and Sandra mimicked them. The pokémon seemed to be happy and it was actually a nice and good day after all.  But then again, there was a battle pending and Draco didn’t wanted to spoil everything remembering it that to Sandra.

After a while, the pokémon fell asleep after the good meal and Sandra, Drake and Lucian walked their way on the river, as asked by the Gym leader.

“So, tell me Draco… what’s your dream about being a trainer?” asked Sandra.

“Well, I want to meet and befriend as many pokémon as possible and I want to research about the legends of the world” answered Draco causing a giggle on Lucian.

“That’s a good goal, but is rather at long reach right?” commented Sandra.

“Yes, I want to know of all the legendary pokémon… I want to befriend them and of course, I want to fight against them and prove to myself that I’m a good trainer” smiled the wolgon.

“That’s good… any other plan?” asked the Gym leader.

“Well, there’s one…” said Draco feeling dumb about it.

“C’mon, you can tell me” smiled Sandra.

“I wanna be a Gym leader” said Draco expecting a mocking from the actual Gym leader.

“That’s magnificent!” cheered Sandra surprising Draco “I mean, if you keep like what you are, you might even be a better Gym leader than our leader!”

“You mean Draco?!” asked surprised Draco.

“Yes, Fogonet city Gym Leader” nodded Sandra “It will get confusing talking about both of you hahaha.”

“Well, I was planning to be his…” Draco gulped “I wanted to be Draco’s pupil.”

“Well, that would be even more confusing” laughed Sandra “But anyways is a good dream after all… a fine goal in the life.”

“Thanks” blushed a bit Draco.

“This seems like a good place, don’t you think?” asked Sandra looking at the open space they were.

“Good place? For what?” asked Draco a bit confused.

“To have our Gym battle!” said Sandra “I wasn’t going to have a battle with you there. I wanted to have a battle in a more natural environment with you. I bet you fight better out the doors.”

Just said that, the cat that told Draco to go there appeared carrying Drake in his arms and followed by Sandra’s pokémon.

“You arranged all this?” laughed Draco “You wanted the battle to be outside!”

“I couldn’t tell you before because you would be examining the area” giggled Sandra “I want to prove your reaction time against unusual environments for a fight. I mean, you were expecting to have a battle in the Gym. And now I’ve take you out to have a battle with you. Let’s see what comes from this.”

Draco smiled and nodded. Of course, that was a fine Gym leader. Testing the trainers in the most perfect way. How to react against an environment you didn’t expected for the battle. That was a good plan since maybe in the pokémon league he would have to confront similar circumstances. The cat took place between them and Draco walked away three meters from Sandra as she did the same. Having six meters between them to fight would be safer.

“This will be a fight between Gym leader Sandra and the challenger Draco from komeo Town!” announced the cat “It will be a battle with two pokémon. If one trainer has no pokémon to continue, the battle is over. Only the challenger can exchange between pokémon!”

“Wow this is so exciting!” squealed Draco in delight. It was the first time he heard that in person.

“Let the match begin!” roared the cat.

“Go Metang!” shouted Sandra and Metang entered the improvised arena from behind the Gym leader.

“Ok, steel psychic…” murmured Draco “Go Drake!” shouted and Drake obeyed entering the arena.

“You can have the first move if you want my dear Draco” said Sandra.

“Oh no, what kind of gentleman will I be, ladies first” conceded Draco.

“And polite” Sandra giggled “But I won’t go easy o you for that! Metan use take down!”

“Drake dodge and counterattack with flamethrower!” ordered Draco.

Metan rushed at high speed against Drake but the dragon pokémon managed to evade the hit that quaked the earth and shot his flamethrower.

“Nice strategy, but elemental advantage will not be enough in this!” shouted Sandra “Metang shake those flames from your body and use zen headbutt!”

Metang obeyed and after spinning he flew high whit its forehead shining. The impact landed directly against Drake sending to the air.

“Endure it Drake I know you can with this pal!” encouraged him Draco “C’mon I believe in you!”

Drake opened his eyes and stopped his ascend opening his wings. The dragon pokémon didn’t awaited for an order and spitted a flamethrower against Metang again but the steel pokémon was spinning towards him using zen headbutt again.

“Dodge it Drake!” roared Draco and Drake obeyed instantly managing to evade another impact “Now use flamethrower at max power!”

Drake opened his maw and spitted a huge flame that covered Metang sending him back to the ground while he spinned to blow away the flames.

“C’mon Metang! Use take down like that!” said Sandra smiling surprising Draco.

“Wait what?!” roared the wolgon.

Metang impacted Drake sending him against the ground and with the hit, the flames went out. Drake ended up dizzy in the floor, unable to continue and with the mouth wide open and the tonge out.

“Dralit cannot continue, Metang is the winner of this fight!” announced the cat.

“Drake!” rushed Draco to pick his friend up “Aww Drake, forgive me for this… I only managed to get you to lose.”

“D-dra…” dizzily cheered Drake before fainting.

Draco took Drake on his arms and returned to his place while Sandra seemed to be worried.

“Is he ok? We can stop if you want…” she said looking at Drake.

“He’s strong he can make it for a few moments more… but I’ll use a potion anyway” said Draco kneeling down and taking a potion from his backpack.

Draco used the medicine and Drake woke up still a bit dizzy due to the powerful impact he had suffered.

“Sorry for that buddy…” said Draco and Drake seemed to get depressed due to the lost “Hey! Cheer up! Now it’s Lucian’s turn! And I bet he will avenge you.”

“Good look…” murmured Drake to Lucian.

Lucian nodded and entered the arena. Now that they knew what kind of strategy Sandra was using, it would get a bit hard to win only with dark pulse. Especially since it was not super effective against steel type pokémon. Draco focused for a while looking at his opponent. Surely, if he managed to take over somehow Metang, Sandra would choose Alakazam. That’d be an easy fight, even if she decided to choose another pokémon, Lucian would be able to win. So right now, the most important thing was to beat Metan and now he had a good idea of how.

“Lucianuse dark pulse!” shouted Draco.

“Metang dodge and use Match punch!” roared Sandra surprising Draco.

Lucian obeyed and shot the dark pulse that Metang dodged and counterattacked with match punch. The attack was supposed to go first but Draco’s order reached Lucian first than Sandra’s to Metang.

“Now dodge Lucian! Dodge and go on top of him!” yelled Draco surprising Sandra.

“What?!” gasped Sandra when Lucian jumped on the back of Metang.

“Now Lucian use aura sphere right against Metang!” shouted Draco.

Lucian charged quickly the aura sphere while Metang tried to break free but was too late. The aura attack impacted directly against the steel pokémon sinking it into the ground.

“METANG!” shouted Sandra.

“Metang is not able to continue, Lucario wins!” announced the cat.

“Nice strategy to get Lucian into Metang’s blind spot kid” accepted Sandra “But you’ll need a better strategy for what is coming!”

“I’ll be ready for whatever you send” said Draco hoping to be right.

“Go Alakazam!” finally said Sandra and Alakazam entered the arena.

“Ok, just as expected” said Draco hoping everything would go fine.

“The final battle is about to begin!” announced the cat and immediately Sandra acted.

“Alakazam use focus blast!” roared the Gym leader leaving Draco completely pale.

“Lucian dodge, dodge dodge!” immediately reacted in fear Draco.

“That won’t do it!” smiled Sandra.

Lucian dodged the several focus blast that Alakazam sent but immediately noticed something wasn’t right. And for when he noticed it, it was too late. Alakazam controlled the blasts mentally and made them impact Lucian’s back sinking him into the ground.

“NO LUCIAN!” roared Draco but Lucian grunted.

“AWAY!” he roared “I-I’m fine… I still can fight…”

“NO… no! I surrender Sandra!” roared Draco but Lucario roared higher.

“NO HE DOESN’t!” roared the pokémon leaving Sandra confused “Neither he nor I will give up…” Lucian stood up balancing his body but still decided to take the battle to the end.

“NO LUCIAN I ALMOST LOST YOU WITH THAT RAMPARDOS I DON’T WANNA LOSE YOU!” roared Draco.

“You won’t…” said Lucian and stood firmly again with a roar “I’m ready to finish this!”

Draco looked at Lucian. His will to continue filled him and his eyes shone bright.

“Ma’am?” asked the cat looking at Sandra, but the Gym leader was smiling holding her hips with the hands.

“We continue” limited to say Sandra “Alakazam use focus blast again!”

“Lucian dodge and use dark pulse!” roared Draco dodging a missed focus blast.

“Now dodge and compact them against Lucian!” yelled Sandra and after dodging the dark pulse, the focus blast returned again.

“Lucian dodge them and go behind!” shouted Draco.

Lucian obeyed dodging at high speed the focus blasts that ended up impacting Alakazam herself. Sandra gasped to that and saw Lucian going right behind Alakazam.

“Alakazam react!” shouted Sandra but Alakazam seemed to be dizzy.

“Lucian use dark pulse right on Alakazam!” shouted Draco and Lucian obeyed.

The dark pulse went right in the back of Alakazam taking her out of the dizziness and to the ground. Alakazam stood up again and Sandra sighed in relieve.

“Alakazam use focus blast again!” ordered Sandra.

“Lucian counterattack with psychic!” ordered Draco “And once you stopped the blasts, use dark pulse again!”

Lucian did as ordered and his mind stopped the focus blast that Alakazam sent. But the psychic pokémon intended to use her mind also to make them advance. The clash of psychic powers made an explosion and the sound of a last focus blast and a dark pulse sounded though no one could see what happened due to the dense cloud of smoke.

The silence reigned for a moment and then the wind blew the cloud leaving the pokémon into it at sight. Alakazam and Lucian were standing, balancing on their feet already weaken. Lucario fell on his right knee and panted, but before the cat referee raised the flag in sign of Sandra’s victory, Alakazam fell back fainted.

“Alakazam cannot continue! The winner is Draco from Komeo Town!” announced the cat.

Draco fell to his knees and Lucian smiled before falling to the ground. Draco reacted and hurried next to Lucian followed by Drake.

“Good job kiddo” smiled Sandra as the cat approached to them “You did quite a good job there. And though you shouted that you surrender your pokémon gave you strength to continue. I saw your eyes right I that moment. That’s why I ignored your comment.”

“Thanks Sandra…” sobbed Draco rubbing Lucian’s head to comfort him.

“You deserve this” smiled Sandra opening a small box containing the Insight badge. A long pointed badge with bulged sides in the middle part where a circle was inserted. In the extremes were two magenta triangles “You did well, and now we gotta hurry to take your pokémon to the pokémon center.”

Draco nodded and carried Lucian on his back while Drake crawled into his backpack looking for a potion. And when he found it, he launched a victorious cry calling Draco’s attention. Draco looked at him and smiled. He used the potion on Lucian and he woke up after a bit but still was unable to move.

“Hard battle aint it?” said Draco smiling.

“Did I won?” asked Lucian noticing he was being carried on Draco’s back and that probably the answer was no.

“Yes you did” said Sandra smiling. She had returned all her pokémon to their pokeballs and sent them back with his assistant to the Gym “But you owe me a second match” she smiled.

“Once I finish this journey I’ll come back” smiled Draco.

They walked as fast as they could the way to the pokémon center and when they entered nurse Joy seemed to almost faint due to the state of Lucian. A Blissey stopped the slim cow from hit the ground and after she recovered, not long after, she took care of Lucian.

Meanwhile, Draco and Sandra sat at the sofa in the waiting room. Draco was admiring his very first Gym badge, happy to have it on his hand.

“You seem very happy” said Sandra smiling.

“This is my first badge” smiled Draco back “And I almost gave up…”

“But Lucian pushed you to continue…” said Sandra “Listen Draco, a pokémon knows his own limits. If Lucian says he can, then he can, unless you see him badly wounded his words won’t be a lie.”

“But I just don’t want to lose him… he’s like a brother to me…” said Draco but his mind said something more. It said “or maybe more”.

“I know that, but if you really give up in that moment, do you have any idea of how would Lucian have felt?” asked Sandra “He wanted to grant you that badge so badly he took all that damage just for you.”

“I know. And I appreciate it” said Draco “It’s just that Lucian is for me something… precious. My only real treasure as a matter of speaking.”

“I don’t quite get what you are trying to say but I guess that’s because it’s part of your family” said Sandra “Drake will eventually be like that too for you, but you cannot go stopping the battles just for that. They know that if they can’t, you’ll know it. But also that if they are capable of taking the risk, you will let them.”

“Thanks… I guess I needed to learn that” smiled Draco with his mind still telling him that Drake might get to be part of his family but he would never feel the same for the dragon pokémon than for Lucian.”

“Look! Nurse Joy already have Lucian and Drake standing up again!” smiled Sandra as the cow approached to them.

“Here kid, your pokémon are fine, but it looks like it was a tough battle” said nurse Joy looking at Sandra.

“Don’t give me that look!” reproached the Gym leader “I did nothing bad! His Lucian wanted to continue and so my Alakazam.”

“I suppose so…” sighed nurse Joy and then noticed that Draco still had the badge on his hand “Well, are you planning to look at it all the day? Guard it in your badge case! It will get dirty otherwise”

“Badge case?” asked Draco “I don’t have one… I was planning to pin them to my clothes or have then in a little bag… I don’t know how trainers do it now… I only have my parent’s reference when he was younger.”

“Ok, I guess I have what you might need, but…” started nurse Joy.

“What? You mean THAT case?!” shouted Sandra standing up in a flash “But you know it belongs to… well… you know…”

“What? What are you talking about I wanna know!” said Draco.

“Well, I happen to have a badge case that belonged to someone pretty important. We might as well ask him if he’d let you have it. Since you have none and Professor Darcy was supposed to give you one…” said nurse Joy.

“But Professor Darcy had none… she gave the three of them” sighed Draco.

“Ok… We’ll call him” said Sandra and go to the phone.

“Call who?!” asked Draco.

“Call you” giggled Sandra leaving Draco confused leaning his head.

Sandra dialed the number and in the screen a tall dragon appeared. Draco got close and almost fainted when he saw his homonym as Gym leader.

“Well hello Sandra” said the dragon looking at his Gym leader comrade “What did I did to deserve a call from you?”

“Well, Draco, it seems like one of the newest trainers from Komeo Town is having a bit of difficulties” she turned at Draco “Come here…” she picked Draco up and though he flailed to be free, she put him in front of the screen “Draco, this is Draco”

“Pardon me?!” leaned his head Gym leader Draco.

“H-h-h-h-hi…” mechanically said Draco raising his hand as a salute.

“Hello little fella, you know what kind of joke is that vixen playing on me?”

“W-Well… m-my name… it’s Draco, sir… we share name” said Draco still in shock t have his idol in front of him.

“Oh! Then it’s a pleasure to meet you haha” laughed Draco.

“T-thanks…” said young Draco.

“Well, the point is that he doesn’t have a badge case and he needed one. Professor Darcy didn’t had any to give him” said Sandra.

“Ok, and you wanted to give him mine?” asked Gym leader Draco.

“If you don’t mind” smiled Sandra.

“Of course, let him have it, after all, it’s already signed with his name” Gym leader Draco laughed and turned his face “Yeah, yeah, I’m coming” he turned at them “Sorry fellas, I gotta go, there’s a challenger here and I need to prove why they call me the master of the leaders.”

“Don’t hurt the poor kid’s pokémon” said Sandra.

“You have to say that to Dialga, not to me” said Draco and turned off the screen.

“D-D-Dialga?!” roared Draco and then he passed out.

“I guess we better take him to the room” said Lucian approaching to them.

“I agree with you” said Sandra.

Lucian carried Draco on his back and Drake on his head as the three went upstairs to the room they were using. Sandra smiled at that. It seemed like that little teen would reach high heights in the pokémon league. Or at least, that was what she expected.
