In my headcanon, Spike really hated having wings because he didn't feel like himself anymore, and thus had them surgically removed. Afterwards, Pinkie Pie arrived at the Golden Oaks Library to see the results of Spike's operation. She and Twilight couldn't be any happier for Spike being how he's supposed to be again.
