Mr. and Mrs. Hopps
Zootopian Gothic
Here is a nice, casual, family photograph of the Bogo family, post-marriage. Oh yes, the chief was living with his lovely cheetah for a while. Mostly because marriage between predators and prey was... this kind of miscegenation wasn't illegal but it was functionally impossible given social backlash. That ended after Bellwether was caught and a new wave of cooperative friendship swept in, helped by Gazelle and Judy.

Zootopian Police Chief Idris Bogo needs no introduction. The cape buffalo is a legend in his own time. A mountain of a man... who can be reduced to a mouse by politics. The finer points differ person to person. In this incarnation he's trying to hold onto his city contract. One of the stipulations was that if he had a child, in or out of wedlock, she was guaranteed funding and a place at a private educational institution. He sort of hoodwinked the city by essentially making them send his hybrid kid to a fancy school. But now he must do anything and everything to keep her there. In a way, he's a Homer Simpson "Do it for her" kind of dad.

The mother of said child is the sweet and lovely Rachel Bogo nee Clawhauser. Yes, that Clawhauser. Her brother was not given special treatment. He was put where he does the most good. The family has a certain... figure. But that's fine. The chief enjoys her zaftig curves, the warm, soft form grown more motherly. And she clearly thinks she's a 60s suburbanite. The mock turtleneck and short capris, it's 100% Mary Tyler Moore.

And the little one. Cute, rambunctious Winifred "Winnie" Bogo. She has the coiled spring energy of a cheetah cub and the trampling enthusiasm of a cape buffalo calf. She takes strongly after her father, but the coat is from her mother. The eyes are just darkly ringed. If she looked down you could see the teardrop streaks. A lil tomboy at heart, clearly, she's actually quite intellectual. She gets good grades, performs well in class, and thanks to dad, she's also mostly bilingual. Zootopian lingua franca and Afrikaans. She doesn't know about the political maneuvers that keep her in a good school or that her parents marriage represented. It's not likely she knew the word miscegenation but in a new Zootopia it won't need to be part of her vocabulary.

Just a cute little portrait of a sweet little family. They pop up here and there in my Zootopia stories, like at Duke and Muffin's wedding,  but I figured, why not? It's adorable.

Aaah Bogo, a strong man, to the benefit but also loss of many. Had Judy not had such luck he would have crushed her under a mountain of parking tickets. He's strident and forthright but can blind himself when he's not careful.

That's why I went this direction. The way he reacted to Bellwether and his desire to have the mayor be appeased read as a political panic. But he seemed to earthy and strong for being just a suit. He's not the type to be chasing a plum position in his retirement. He has something he needs to keep. So when I was designing his family and having a bit of a laugh at him having to put up with his talented but ever exuberant brother-in-law, I tried to think of a good leash that worked both ways. Making him a "Do it for her" dad was perfect. He'll swallow distasteful politicking because he hoodwinked stuffy lazy-bigots into funding his little girl's education.

That's a dangerous game. So often people have hoodwinked the wrong people and inadvertently given them the leg up the need to cause oh so much chaos. I suspect a lot of the mess we're in now is because certain people never thought certain others would ever be any sort of problem, so why not deal with them to get ahead?

Oh he's already been burned hard. The whole movie is about the biggest burn that could ever possibly happen because he had to bend to Bellwether on more matters that the good idea of putting Judy on the case. And to Lionheart. And the new mayor now, and it galls him. But it's clearly his character to charge and trust his strength. No matter what, the only thing that matters is keeping Winnie in her fancy school (likely Savanna Prep) and giving her the best possible opportunity. He thinks he can protect Rachel and Winnie from everything. Benji too. He's noble, but not always expedient.
