To be honest there's a ridiculous truth in that XD This can be as difficult as easy to answer but in short, yes. They just have to grab one.

I always imagined something more like a bonding process or that the bug would accept you.
This boi was just so happy to have a friend and then the grub accepted him... and thus best friends forever!

Now makes me wonder.. do their friendship last for alife time? even if the gator boi marries and has kids?

Zemmeng mentioned "bug boy", so I have to guess male. Sleeping in the bed together might seem to indicate otherwise, but that was a running theme in many panels as they grew up.
