This is a sketchy redraw of some tiny ballpoint pen sketches from the 80s, completely with the big toony 80s style eyes I still tend to draw. Maybe I'll do a proper character sheet for him. (After I do proper sheets for my current characters. ;-)
Until recently I’d forgotten about an OC I made in the 80s. I found some pages of filler paper that slipped behind the drawers of an art supply cart where I used to store drawings and stuff. It’s a small part from a Wuzzles fanfic I must’ve scribbled around 1986, probably during study hall or something. It was written in blue ballpoint pen. The paper got crunched up behind the drawer and forgotten for a couple of decades. In the margins there were some really bad character sketches of two characters I’d forgotten almost completely. One was the subject of the fic, a Wuzzles OC named Jagle. Today I’d call him an anthro or semi-anthro gryphon. In the Wuzzle way, he’s half jaguar and half eagle since every Wuzzle is a hybrid of some sort. I was always a jag, even then. He’s kind of semi-anthro with big wings (most Wuzzles have tiny wings). I think I tried to draw digitigrade legs and failed pretty badly. In the two surviving pages (both sides) it’s obvious that he’s a bumbling villain predator looking to eat other Wuzzles. He has an obsession with Hoppo and the relationship is a bit abusive. Hoppo is the abusive one. She leads him on and uses him and treats him like crap. Googling the name, I see that it has two separate entries on Urban Dictionary, a talkative europhile and a term for masturbating. There’s a surname with an “ä” too but his name wouldn’t be pronounced like joggle. Maybe I should double the Gs to make the pronunciation more clear. Those things from UD fit pretty well though. Maybe I’ll revive him as my oldest OC that I remember. Today I’d see him as being sexually predatory and pretty toony and ridiculous. I don't think he talks. He makes noises instead, which I've always loved. There's no dialog for him in the bits of story and I like him that way. If I chose a voice actor for him I think it'd be Dee Bradley Baker, doing a voice similar to M.E.R.C.
The writing is really annoying. The narrator plays a big part, describing the character's motivations instead of letting them play out in the story, which I’d never do today. Characters and their actions should speak for themselves as much as possible. I remember the writers on the show did the same thing and I guess I was following that. There wasn’t much material on writing back then. I remember having some awful books like Writing Scripts That Sell or some such trash a few years later. I think I could write the character a lot better now and really do him justice in or out of the Land of Wuz.
There were some pen sketches of a wolf character that I vaguely remember too. He’s a cyborg with way too many accessories and functions like an 80s toy. He almost looks like a design for an action figure. I remember him but can’t remember his name and it’s not there. I might call him Elon or something because I think his name was something like that but not exactly.
Today I feel a lot less embarrassed by this than I would’ve when I first got involved in the furry fandom in the 90s. Wuzzles fic seemed really uncool then, even with furries who were into Talespin and other Disney Afternoon shows and TTA. Now it seems kind of cool that I was into this kind of thing back in the days of B&W funny animal comics and cheesy animated shows. I felt really isolated back then and, as now, didn’t identify as human. There was no context for my feelings about furries then and no internet like it is now. There were some BBSes and science fiction fandom that became my obsession for most of the decade after that.
