Oh I've seen other arts, but it was either strictly Rule 34, no plot, or not a ship, just them in the same picture. Human! I contemplated making her a hedgehog, but the pictures in my head already featured her as human... And I thought that would be an interesting conflict (I'm now realizing Sonic probably will be the only one not conflicted about his feelings, huh): Shadow falling for Sonic - right species, wrong gender, for Maria - right gender, wrong species. But that means also no need to add pseudoincest to it, there's enough conflict. Maria's conflicted feelings are, however, based a bit on the fact that Shadow was her only friend, her constant companion, so seeing him as something else (that is, aside from the species thing)... it's hard to accept.
