Background/History
Despite his position, Caliburn had a modest upbringing as a farm boy. From a young age, he displayed an affinity for light magic, such as being stronger in the sunlight than at night, and other abilities. Though it would become clear he needed guidance, so at the age of nine he was taken in by a group of sages who would teach him the ways of the arcane. He progressed rather quickly at first, but as he grew older and learned more about the Kingdom of Camelot, he started to get a vested interest in knighthood.
Knowing that, as a mage, he could not become a full knight, the sages opted to incorporate lessons of knighthood and swordplay so long as he maintained a focus on his powers. He took up the sword at fourteen after he had gained proficiency in Light Magic. Caliburn was nothing if not creative and he began to incorporate the two, much to the pleasure of his tutors. Upon completion of his training, which included learning High Ancient Magic, he became known as the land's first Knight Mage, and his family name was kept secret to protect his homstead and parents. With the power of light imbuing his blade, it was titled Sol, the Sun Blade.
Without a church to officiate his knighthood, Caliburn was free to serve whoever he wished, which worked out to his favor. He became a wandering knight, serving whichever king or noble required his duties, helping the townsfolk as well if he wasn't already on a mission. It would be through these actions that he gained a reputation for himself, and it wouldn't be long before other kingdoms were asking for him by name, offering a variety of rewards from gold to personal company.
Caliburn's life wasn't without struggle, however, as being a mage meant he was targeted by dark wizards. Many could be dealt with, but some were stronger than others. He came close to losing his life to one who sought to steal his power for himself, and gained a rather irrational fear of restraints since that day. Still, with his power ensuring the sun kept him healthy, he lived far longer than most people.
It would eventually come to a point that Merlin took drastic measures to save the kingdom. The grand wizard knew that if Caliburn continued to be assaulted by dark wizards, his body would become corrupt and the very kingdom would be in ruins. After much discussion, it was decided that Caliburn would sacrifice his freedom, imbuing his soul into Sol with protective magic. The Light Magic that was so craved would be imbued into another, more powerful blade, protected by the Lady of the Lake: Excalibur. His body, a symbol of his fortitude, was transformed into Excalibur's Scabbard. Eventually Caliburn was pulled from the stone by the new king Merlin had crafted, though eventually he had been returned to the stone after he was broken in battle, and Arthur had claimed Excalibur.
It would come to pass, however, that things would change for the worse after all. The dark magic remaining in the scabbard would corrupt King Arthur, and Caliburn's Light Magic would be scattered into the other three sacred blades: Arondight, Galatine, and Laevatein.
Upon Sonic's spirit awakening the lost light within the sacred blades, Caliburn regained his magic for himself and transformed into Excalibur, retaining the power even after reverting to normal.
He would have a brief moment of release during Sonic's tenure as temporary king by the reformed Merlina, at which he had a bonding moment with the hedgehog. But it wouldn't be until centuries later that they were reunited in Sonic's world, the wolf's still present fondness of the man who changed his world allowing them to become even closer.
