This page raises an interesting question, if our own moon where to be split apart like that would our planet survive? Would we survive? keep it going love this comic.

It couldn't split like that.

Either whatever did it would be powerful enough to permanently drive the pieces apart (in which case the planet you're observing this from is history, because the flash heat from that alone would boil off the oceans and strip the atmosphere) or it'd quickly fall back into a roughly spherical shape due to gravity (but you'd still have at least one hemisphere lightly toasted).

Actually, it could split like that and stay split, but it would have to be within the Roche limit of the earth-moon system, which would require it to be significantly closer to the planet

It's interesting that you asked that question. There is a book called Seveneves, who's story revolves around that exact concept. I really enjoyed that book
