Simple characters aren't necessarily a bad thing, though. I've found that, sometimes, it's the simple characters who are the most striking or memorable, especially if they have a strong personality and/or story behind them. That, I think, is where your characters really shine. The designs might be simple, but they simply drip with personality, which makes them fascinating.
