The chef's knife is the symbol of the Better Life Detachment. It symbolizes many things for them - some obvious, some proprietary.

Zoel was originally hired on as a subcontractor civilian to do secretarial and custodial work for them. As he continues to inculcate their principles, he's found himself ready to devote to them entirely.

Here, he practices reciting their oath in order to ready himself to total commitment.

He's such a good boy.
