The summer of 2014 I volunteered at my local animal shelter. I'd almost adopted two other dogs I'd met during my work, only to lose out on them by not acting fast enough. I'd started to lose hope for finding the right one, and one day I saw you pop up on the website, somehow having missed you come through the intake kennels. I went over as soon as I saw you, learned two other applications had already been submitted, and asked to see you anyway. Because I was a respected volunteer they let me see myself in to meet you. I remember you were small, afraid, huddled in the back of your kennel. I let myself in and sat by the door. You came up to me cautiously, and pressed your head firmly against my leg. I rested my hand on your back and sat there with you, felt your shiver slowly turn to calm, you looked up at me, and I knew you were the one. I took you out on a walk, went back, and submitted the third application for you that day. I spent the next days an anxious wreck, waiting to hear back. Against my better judgement I kept going back to visit you even though I knew you'd likely go to someone else. And after two days, somehow, somehow, I got so lucky to be given the chance to bring you into my life.
I tried my best to ease your wounded soul, to give you a home worth coming back to. Despite a three year history of running away every chance you got, you never ran from me. You gave me your trust, I gave you my empathy, and we found the greatest companionship I have ever known.
You brought me immense happiness, comfort, and sorrow. I love you, and will never forget you. Thank you.
