For fun, I tried painting all the colors in the same layer. It was interesting, but a bit... "messy"! Yes, I think that term works well with digital paint too!
Okay, first off. AWESOME! Keep trying new things!! Because it's obviously working for you.
Second, comparing this speedpaint to the one before, I have to say the colouring here has much more depth. I feels less... "blocked in", more of a painterly and even realistic look. It's a lot more engaging and interesting for me as a viewer to look at.
I HIGHLY APPROVE of this style of your colouring, and I hope you try this again in the very near future!

Oh, thanks! Actually, this feels a little TO realistic to me, or to much volume... I like to preserve a little cartoon feel to them. But on the other hand, I do like some things here, so maby if I can find a golden middle road between these two styles somewhere :-P

I can understand that! I mean, considering they ARE cartoon characters. XD I suppose it's more my preference here- and for me, this is far superior to the first speedpaint because it's less cartoon'ish.
I'm sure if you keep pushing both ends you'll find a happy medium you are happy with, and that's what counts! You have the skill, just gotta get there. :D

I have ok drawing and painting skills (with traditional media), I'm just used to making landscapes, portraits, still life and occasionally sparsely dressed chicks XD So this is my first time playing around with characters and styles like this, but it sure is fun too :-P

I saw the first speedpaint of Don and while that one looked good, this one seems better. His face looks so much more intense in this one, and he fades into the color a bit cleaner. I'm not sure if you shaded his face but it looks like you did, it really adds a dimention to his expression. Love it. :)

Thank you! Yes, there is shading in his face, but the background color also shines through, blending in to it. But mainly, this was more a "painting the light"-style, yeah!

Thanks! I like it to, but it's not quite where I want it to be for "general use"... I want to keep the cartoon aspect, kinda. But I may make some pics in a more painted style, just to try it out and play with it!
