The only modifications I did before printing it were re-scaling it to 92% of its original size and removing the ball joints. I set the fill density of the print to 30% to keep the weight down, the ball joints probably would not have been able to hold the legs up if it was standard action figure plastic.

30%? Wouldn't that make it fragile in return? Other than that, I can see the usefulness in defining density for the print. Mere epoxy or plastic wouldn't allow for lightweight builds--and would make a floppy robot due to weight issues.
Do you use PLA or ABS filament for your work? ABS can be smoothed over with some acetone rubbed in with a cloth to remove the lines of printing. :)

my printer uses pla, and you'd be surprised how tough this stuff can be, high quality prints usually want to go 40% by default, I just drop it to 30 to cut down on time and save material. The internal volume is filled with a support lattice not unlike a honeycomb, which keeps down weight while preserving durability. Test prints have a fill density of only 10% and even those can be fairly tough, you'd have to put quite a bit of effort to break one.

there are strengths and weaknesses to pla and abs plastic. For pla it is very stiff and brittle, good for making static objects but not for something that needs to be flexible or hold friction, for example I could never make a ball joint with it. However it is very easy to use in a lower cost device and does not produce any fumes so you can use it anywhere. ABS plastic is the same type of plastic used to make Lego bricks and action figures, it has some flexibility and holds friction quite well. Of course the weak points are that it has to be kept warm while it is printing because if the printed part gets too cold it won't attach to the layers on top of it, and melting it can produce some nasty toxic fumes, so you need to use a closed printer that can maintain a controlled temperature and keep it in a well ventilated area to make sure the fumes don't build up. That's why even though I have a 3D printer I'm still a customizer, since I can make parts for my toys but I can't make the whole thing from scratch.

From what I've researched about ABS, it should be able to melt without fumes though it is sticky as chewed chewing gum making it tough to handle--and it would make sense for it to not stick with a cold part of itself, as it is meant to be used as a whole through pressure injection or pressure pressing.
For my understanding that came from research on plastic it was the PVC the one that gave off toxic fumes quite easily. This is one plastic that I'd avoid for anything.
If it weren't due to it not being easily bought here, or available, I'd settle for styrene sheets and Aves epoxy sculpt clay for going bananas from scratch--and save money for commissioning prints of parts too hard to make on my own, like making small hands using TPU filament which is very flexible.

I imagine that for filaments it must be a different story, as what you mentioned regarding the toxicity of ABS is news to me.
