Sometimes with shading/detail practice I take a sprite from an old 8-bit game and turn it 16/32 bit while adding more details to fit the concept/boxart/3D-Version more, it's fun practice and you can also learn more about spriting sometiems in the process when you need to guess what the intention of that part of the sprite was.
