I actually forgot that Red Shard was an abandoned commission, until Marissasart asked to commission one of her own.  So I offered her the chance to just buy him right off my shelf so she wouldn't have to wait.  (The Green Shard is mine, I made it as a personal custom and he stands in my display between Rouge and Tangle to this day.)  I feel kind of bad for Shard, as much as I love this character on a technical level he's basically Gemerl, even has the same color scheme.

Heh, I remember him from the Archie Comics storyline near the end.

Poor robot-boy--had the memories yet couldn't get close to neither Sonic nor his parents, made of hodgepodge Metal Sonic parts with their limits, and I am not certain if he indeed had some parts of Gemerl as well which helped amalgamate all of it into a coherent whole.

I hope your customer enjoys her new custom! :D

Shard's origin is fairly complicated, though his look is pretty basic, the color scheme is based off Metal Sonic 3.0 from Sonic Rivals 2 (which might have been an homage to Gemerl since it's the same color scheme as his) and the look is based off his Neo form from Sonic Heroes.  As for his real origin...let me go through the bullet points.  He is the first Metal Sonic, from the Sonic CD adaptation in issue 25 (for the record, a mistranslation led to him being called Mecha Sonic, which was actually written into his backstory, but I digress.)  After he accidentally melted his own legs trying to match Sonic's speed Robotnik salvaged, rebuilt, and upgraded him to face Knuckles in the Knuckles Chaotix adaptation, where a power gem allowed him to grow into Titan Metal Sonic, but Knuckles defeated him.  Over 50 issues later he came back, independent of Robotnik he rebuilt his own body, using a surviving piece of the power gem to upgrade his speed and power.  When he saw the bond of friendship between Sonic and Tails he grew a conscience and sacrificed himself to save them from an erupting volcano (I believe this may have been an homage to Hyper Metal Sonic's death in the Sonic OVA, which had just come out at the time.)  That would have been the end of his story, but other Sonic robots would pop up, including Silver Sonic (an homage to the Sonic robot from Sonic 2 and Sonic & Knuckles) a more accurate depiction of Metal Sonic as he appeared in the games, and an army of Metal Sonics that resembled the Neo-Metal form that were built by Uncle Chuck and the Acorn military to fight Robotnik.  WAY after that it was revealed that the piece of the power gem wasn't just an energy source, its crystal matrix actually stored Metal Sonic's programming, and analyzing it is how they were able to build the new Metal Sonic bodies, (a project they were going to shelf when Sonic came back from space, revealing he wasn't dead...long story.)  BUT when Naugus claimed the title of King Sally's brother recruited Uncle Chuck and some other side characters to form the "Secret Freedom Fighters," who built Mecha Sonic a new body and gave him a spot on the team under the code name "Jack," but his personal name was Shard.  He wanted to do good to make up for the evil he had done in his past life serving Eggman, and he even might have been developing a romantic relationship with Nicole.  The last issue of the Archie comic continuity before the Super Genesis Wave was dedicated to him having his final confrontation with Metal Sonic, a battle that left his fate ambiguous.

But like I said, his basic storyline and character archetype are VERY similar to Gemerl, a powerful super robot who tried to destroy the world, was salvaged and rebuilt by a one of the good guys (Tails in Sonic Advance 3) and is trying to lead a peaceful life and help fight Eggman when he can.

Thanks for the reminder, and wow was that a complicated backstory for Shard. I can see what you meant in regard to Gemerl too.

My personal favorite robot was in fact Emerl, followed by Gamma and ending with Omega--I like the design of those three, what can I say? XD
