Chapter 3: Simba and Nala's Prideland Adventures
Part 3: Jungle Ambush

“Nala!”  Simba’s eyes grew wide with terror as he gaped at the large python wrapped around Nala’s body.  The two cubs had ventured into the small jungle that bordered Mufasa’s kingdom in the hopes of a fun adventure.  Instead, they had been ambushed almost immediately by the gray and yellow snake in search of an easy meal.  The python flexed its strong muscles as it emerged from the thick foliage, squeezing tighter and tighter around Nala’s chest and stomach.  Within minutes, it would crush her ribs, causing her to suffocate.

“Simba!  D-do something!”  The cream-colored cub could barely manage a strained whisper through her labored breathing.  Nala clawed at the ground in a desperate attempt to slip out of the snake’s grasp, but it was no good.  The serpent had coiled between her legs and under her tail, effectively immobilizing her.  All it had to do was wait for her to die.

Simba’s mind raced as he cautiously tried to close in on Nala.  Every time he took a step towards his friend, the python would strike at him with its non-venomous fangs.  It wasn’t going to give up its meal without a fight.  As the prince danced around the serpent, he desperately tried to remember what his father had taught him.  Following the incident at the elephant graveyard, Mufasa had spent a fair amount of time teaching his son several self-defense techniques that even a cub could pull off.  Unfortunately, none of those techniques were particularly relevant for this situation.  He would have to improvise.  If he could just get to Nala…

“H-help…”

The girl’s voice was weak, and Simba could tell her strength was giving out.  He was out of time.  The prince lunged towards Nala in one last desperate attempt, wincing in pain as the python landed a strike on his left shoulder.  It was the opening he needed.  Simba bit down with all his strength on the snake’s scaly body, sinking his teeth into the flesh just behind its head.  The python hissed loudly in pain, but it stubbornly refused to release its grip on the young lioness.  Simba dug his claws into the soft soil and pulled back as hard as he could, stretching the snake out until, finally, it began to lose its hold on its prey.  As the python’s muscles involuntarily relaxed, Nala quickly slipped out of the coil and tumbled forward, landing in a heap on the soft ground.  Simba swung his head to the side, tossing the serpent several feet away.  The golden-brown cub then pivoted and braced himself to absorb a counterattack, but one never came.  Instead, the python slithered back into the underbrush, giving up its meal to avoid further injury.

“Nala!  Are you alright?!”  Simba anxiously dove to the cream-colored cub’s side and gently helped her into a sitting position.

“I…think…so,” Nala choked out through an intense coughing fit.  “Just…give me a minute…”  Her sides were badly bruised, but, much to the cubs’ relief, there didn’t seem to be any serious injuries.  After resting for several minutes, Nala was able to climb to her feet and slowly walk while leaning against Simba’s side for support.  It was then that the girl noticed the two puncture holes in the prince’s shoulder.  A small trail of blood had trickled from the wound, matting his fur with the sticky red liquid.  “Simba, you’re bleeding!”

“Oh, right,” the young lion winced.  “It bit me when I tried to get to you.”

“Are you alright?  That looks pretty bad…”

“Don’t worry, I’m fine,” Simba replied reassuringly.  In reality, his shoulder was throbbing with pain, but there was no reason to let Nala know that.  “Come on, we should probably get back home before our parents find out we’re gone.”

Nala nodded in agreement before gently nuzzling her face against Simba’s cheek.  “Thanks for saving me, Simba.”

“Of course,” Simba smiled as he affectionately returned the nuzzle.  “But next time, you have to save me!”

Thanks!  I don't currently have a ff account, but I've been considering one.  I've written several longer stories as part of an ongoing series, but I wanted to finish the full series before posting.  I'll be sure to post a link here if/when I ever get it uploaded.
