Keyah couldn’t sleep. The storm was tapering off, but the rain didn’t relent. She felt sick, cold and alone. Glancing around she saw everyone else resting fairly comfortably. Ni and Kinu had huddled close together, Saeska slept a few feet from her father while Asani was passed out leaning on a rock. Hakima stayed close to her, but felt no warmth from her body. Her heart was aching so, the image of Kopa running from her tore at her, despising the fact the boys rejected him. Deciding to get up she found her way over to Amri. She looked down at him, resting so comfortably next to Saeska. It was disgusting to her, painful even; it was as if she didn’t know him anymore. Worse she didn’t trust him. Her eyes wandered over to Asani, taking a deep breath she glared fiercely. Hastily she crept up to him and stared down at his sleeping body. She was so furious with him; he had always stirred up trouble between her and Kopa. She wasn’t stupid, Keyah knew he desired her for a long time but she would never return the affection. Raising her paw she seemed ready to strike at him. Trembling in anger she clenched it to her chest and turned away.
“Fuck you, you pig.” She whispered. As she turned toward her sister she carried her head low. Approaching she saw Kinu and Ni cuddled close together. Closing her eyes, she recalled the times Kopa held her like that. Keyah was ready to give anything just to feel him close to her once more. Her head down she leaned in giving her sisters cheek a soft kiss.
“Don’t let him go.” She whispered. Kinu moaned and nudged herself a little closer in Ni’s arms. Keyah could feel the tears forming again, yet she was so sick of crying. She did her best to shake it off, walking back towards Hakima. Closing her eyes, she drifted off to the comfort of her fond memories of Kopa. Holding him, kissing him and especially mating with him. It was tearing her apart inside to think it was all over, to know he had gone feeling rejected by the pride he loved. Lost in her thoughts, she ended up passing right by Hakima. She didn’t notice, or maybe didn’t care, until she realized something was in her way and opened her eyes. Saeska stood before her, smiling as Keyah stumbled into her.
“Not a good time to sleep walk.” She said quietly. Keyah brushed it off and remained silent. “Are you holding up ok?” She asked.
“I’ve lost someone I love. To a pride I thought loved us. I’m so stupid, why did I let my hopes get built up like this.” She retorted.
“Don’t be silly, our pride still loves you. Mother stayed at your side the whole time.” Saeska argued pointing behind Keyah. She glanced back to Hakima’s sleeping body a good distance away.
“I never doubted her love for me. But Amri?” She moaned. “And Asani.” She growled turning to him once more.
“Daddy just did what he thought was best, and he was right. He just went about it wrong. Ni, mommy and Kinu think he should be part of our pride fully and there right. But to keep him from his family far away, that’s wrong.”
“And what about my family?” Keyah asked softly.
“You are our family.” Saeska stated happily.
“No, I mean, Kopa and my family.” She reaffirmed, placing a paw on her belly. Saeska looked down at her in wonderment.
“Oh! Mother was sneaking you away.” She whispered. “Wait, how can you be sure?”
“I’m not sure, not yet. But I can feel it I think.” She insisted. Looking out towards the open savannah, bathed in darkened night she had made her choice.“I’m going to find him.” She decided, walking past Saeska. Turning around she joined her.
“Of course, but let’s all go.”
“No! I’m not going to wait on them any longer. This is my decision, and if I am with cubs, they will know there father.” She reaffirmed. “Tell them when they awake, that I have deserted. I will not depend on this pride anymore.” Saeska rushed ahead cutting Keyah off.
“I can’t, I won’t. You can’t go out in the dark like this alone! I won’t let you!” She protested.
“I know, that’s why I hope you’ll forgive me.”
“Huh?” She asked, confused. Keyah gave a quick wind up and blew across Saeska’s head with a hard strike. She gasped and fell down, unconscious.
“That’s why.” Keyah said to her slumbering body. Bowing down she stroked her head, kissing Saeska’s cheek.
“I’m sorry. Please forgive me.” She whispered. Rushing off into the night she was determined to find him. As she raced off into the savannah she looked for any signs on the ground, foot prints a feint scent, broken grass anything. A good few moments of searching she caught a lucky break, a large paw print in the mud, it pointed out to the open savannah. It was her first and only hint for now, and she would follow it. She took to her training in hunting, working as best she could to track down her lover.

Kopa was not fairing any better. Nathari his new friend was settled beside him fast asleep. Kopa couldn’t rest; so much had happened that the only peace he found was in watching the rushing water pass him by in the stream. The sound of the water was soothing, save for the drizzle still pelting its way through the trees above. The ground was cold and muddy, though soft it was nothing to the warmth of his mates arms. He dwelled on the words he said as he left, the argument with Amri. He was so very disappointed in him. In Kopa’s eyes, Amri was as close to a father he could get, and he was so eager and ready to be recognized as a full member of the pride. To know that he wasn’t worthy, not wanted, weighed heavy on his heart. As he continued to gaze off into the stream, his attempt to lull himself to sleep was disturbed by Nathari. Moaning and groaning, the boy fidgeted and began crying out in his sleep. The sharp noises and sudden movements kept averting his attention.
“This must have been what Asani kept complaining about.” Kopa noted. Reaching over he began prodding the boy with his paw. “Hey, wake up, it’s just a bad dream.” Nathari abruptly awoke and looked towards Kopa with panic in his eyes.
“You!” He cried out, leaping to his feet. As he landed he cried out, cringing in pain from his wound.
“Hey, easy!” Kopa insisted trying to calm him down.
“Get back!” Nathari demanded, shuddering away from him. Kopa complied and sat nearby giving him a little space. “Just stay away from me!”
“What did I do?” Kopa asked calmly. The boy didn’t respond, he sat there panting and staring at the ground. “Come on Nathari relax, it’s just me.” Kopa assured him. Nathari took a bit of time to calm down; he was still in a daze about what was real at the moment and what was part of his dream.
“Why are you helping me? I want to know! As soon as I get healthy again I’ll just kill you, so why?”
“Why would you kill me?” Kopa asked, flustered by the statement.
“Just answer the fucking question!” Nathari barked aloud.
“Don’t talk to me like that!” He fired back. “And as far as your question goes it’s as simple as this. I lost my pride, you lost yours. We’ll have a better chance at survival if you can get back on your feet and we stick together.” He explained getting up and turning his back to him. “Oh and by the way, good luck trying to kill me, last time you tried that I had you squealing in my jaws you runt!” he mocked, briefly looking to him.
“Ugh, this isn’t what was supposed to happen!” He cried. “I was supposed to train with Ezea, get a few take over’s and expand our pride. Then I could be a great warrior just like him.”
“He’s not a great warrior, he’s a loud mouth like someone else I knew.” Kopa scoffed, facing him once more.
“Oh no.” Nathari stammered shaking his head. “You don’t understand. I’ve seen what Ezeamaka can do and it’s terrifying. I’ve seen him wipe out three lions at once, he’s so strong he could rip the leg from a wildebeest and beat him with it!”
“Why did he lose to Amri then?” Kopa asked with a smirk.
“He didn’t lose. We’re you even watching them fight? Cause I was.”
“No, I was too busy saving Asani’s sorry ass from what’s his name.”
“Well I saw it.” He stated. “That big lion from your pride was pretty skilled. He kept Ezea on his guard pretty well. But Ezea would out last him; the old one was getting tired.”
“Amri is a great warrior, he trained both Asani and Ni how to fight. He started training me as well. But to be honest, I don’t know much about him. I know he had a large pride and big family once, and his father was his teacher. Some kind of master of combat or somthing.”
“A master? You mean like master Akinlana?” He asked in awe.
“I don’t know, Amri never went into much detail about his old family.” Kopa replied lowering his head.
“Akinlana is my hero. He’s so wise, so strong. Ezeamaka is his grandson. I’ve wanted to be like him my whole life, that’s why I joined with Ezea when he left.”
“So what happened after your fight with us?” Kopa asked. Nathari sniffled and lowered his head.
“Well, we rested a while. Grabbed something to eat that night, then a couple of days ago he scolded me and Kamili for our failures. He took Kamili aside and, I watched him take him to the water. When he got there, he threw him to the ground, and started cutting him.” He cried. Kopa moved in a little closer and reached out, placing a paw on his shoulder. “He called me over, told me to hold him. There was so much blood and, I couldn’t watch. When he finished, he said it was my turn; he cut right down my back. He said, for helping him with Kamili I got to die last.”
“That’s disgusting! Nathari, how could praise someone who does that to you!” Kopa demanded.
“Well.” He trailed off. “I don’t really like him. But Akinlana told me to honor my master. Ezea agreed to train me so, he was my master.” He explained. Pausing for a bit he continued. “But, he also said. “The path of the warrior, is laid before you by the heart. The weak fall to the shadows, but the true of heart can rend the wicked in body or spirit.”
“Sounds like a wise lion. But Ezea is a monster, he nearly killed you.” Kopa pleaded. Looking to his wound he cringed a moment. “Well, if that get’s any worse. Maybe he did.”
“Maybe.” He admitted.
“Look, I’m not one to tell you what to do alright? I’ve got my own problems. To be honest if you really are going to try to kill me, then I’m going to have to leave you here to die.” Kopa stated firmly. Nathari’s jaw slacked a moment before he dropped his head, pawing at the ground. “Is that what you want? To be stuck out here alone, and starve to death? I haven’t seen a lion eat well when he can hardly move let alone hunt. And you haven’t eaten in days have you?”
“No.” He whined. Kopa waited for an answer from him. But he seemed hesitant to give one. He just continued to paw at the ground.
“Alright, I’m out of here.” Kopa declared turning away from him. As he started along the stream Nathari’s eyes grew wider.
“But!” He cried out.
“Bye kid!” He called back.
“Stop! Don’t go!” He shouted. Nathari began staggering towards Kopa. He paused a moment, keeping his back turned to the boy. “Don’t leave me here. I don’t want to die!” He cried out. Kopa’s eyes widened. He could feel the words echo in his ears, the ring shook him to his heart. Another memory was surfacing. Wandering through the grasslands, he remembered seeing Amri. He had looked off in the distance then turned back to Kopa. Rushing over to his side he could hear his voice.
“What on earth!? By the very heavens boy what has happened to you?!”
“Please help me! I don’t wanna die!” He cried. The thought made Kopa shudder more. He could feel tears coming to his eyes; a horrible feeling crept up within him. He was turning away someone in the very position he was in. He swung around and faced Nathari, he had fallen to the ground and was crawling toward Kopa.
“Don’t, go.” He pleaded, breathing heavily. Kopa rushed over to him; throwing himself on top of him he lowered himself and Nathari to the ground. The boy cried into his paws. “I don’t wanna die.”
“Still going to try to kill me?” Kopa questioned with a gasp. He could feel the lump trying to form in his throat.
“No, I’m sorry! I’m soo so sorry! Just please, I don’t want to be alone.” He coughed as he spoke, still crying hard between his own paws. Kopa lowered his head to his and hushed him.
“It’s alright kido, I won’t leave you alone.” He assured him, rubbing his cheek softly on his head.
“I’m so sorry.” He apologized again.
“I forgive you, it’s ok. You’re going to be alright so long as I can help it.”

As the morning dawned, Ni and Kinu rose up ready to inform Amri of their plans.
“Should be good to go, we should probably stop after an hour or so and pick off something to eat. Get our strength going you know?” She suggested.
“Yeah, sounds good to me.” He agreed with a smile. As they paced over to Amri’s sleeping body Kinu shuddered taking a deep breath.
“We’re really going to do this!” She giggled with excitement.
“You bet.” He nodded. Kinu glanced over to Saeska’s sleeping body noticing something amiss. Kinu remembered seeing Saeska planting herself beside her father the night before.
“Huh, that’s odd.” She stated.
“What?”
“What’s Saeska doing all the way over there?” She asked. Ni turned towards her to and began to wonder the same thing. Abruptly the thought dawned on him, looking around he noticed something else was missing.
“Shit, where’s Keyah?!” He exclaimed.
“What?!” Kinu looked around in a panic. “Oh no she didn’t!” Ni growled and started toward Saeska.
“Of course she did, if I were her I would.” Ni cautiously approached Saeska and gently nudged her. She didn’t stir awake. “Saeska, wake up!” He insisted. The commotion was finally stirring Amri and Hakima. Ni leaned down and tapped her cheeks, trying his best to wake her up. As her head bounded around in his paws, she at last show signs of stirring awake.
“Ohhh my head.” She cried. Ni heaved a sigh of relief and helped Saeska to her feet.
“You alright?” He asked.
“I guess.” She moaned rubbing her face.
“What’s going on here?” Amri demanded, approaching them from behind.
“Amri, we need to talk, now.” Ni replied.
“Can I check on my daughter first?” He asked, almost sarcastically.
“Fine.” Ni agreed.
“You ok baby? What happened to your head? Does it hurt?” He asked softly, stroking her back. Hakima joined the group and immediately grabbed Amri’s attention.
“Husband, where is Keyah?”
“Where do you think?” Ni answered.
“She left.” Saeska whispered.
“She what!?” Amri exclaimed.
“She deserted; she told me she won’t wait on you. I tried to stop her, she conked me out.”
“Damn it!” Hakima cried out. Ni, Kinu, Amri and Saeska all turned to her shocked. “Now this has gone far enough! To watch Kopa go was painful enough, now I must know one of my precious girls is out in the wilds alone?!”
“Not for long.” Ni interrupted. “Kinu and I are leaving to find Kopa. If Keyah is out there, we’ll bring her back to.”
“No!” Hakima snapped. “No I will not have these half cocked plans risking the lives of my loved ones.” She immediately refuted. Turning back to Amri, she took her stance not an inch from his face. ”Amri I love you dearly, I’ve trusted your decisions and you have lead us well. But our family is breaking, and if you don’t mend this soon I will whip you until you appoint someone to lead us properly.” She demanded. Though the others were shocked to hear her say it, Amri kept his head down and remained quiet for a moment.
“Ni, get Asani up. Kinu, Hakima, go fetch something for us to eat. I need to speak with you two Ni.” Amri ordered.

The sunlight was just breaking through the trees, the morning was well on as the warmth was coming through. Kopa was still resting comfortably atop his new friend. His crying having settled in the night they both managed to get some much needed sleep. To his surprise Nathari was reasonably still and warm making a very adequate pillow. His eyes blinking, he saw the strangest sight in front of him. Grey legs, blurred by his morning vision stood before him. Wiping at his eyes, the vision became much more clear, as a head bowed down with a hideous smile before him.
“Morning sleepy head!” Banzai joked. Kopa, shocked by his prescience pounced up, staying atop Nathari’s body. Looking around he could see the other two, the one called Shenzi was off to his left, while Ed circled around the right, at least until he walked into a tree.
“Well well well, looky who’s finally awake? Our little deformed zebra friend out in the wilds, and all alone.” Shenzi mocked.
“Not quite alone. Look, he’s got a little crippled cub with him!” Kopa snarled at Banzai and offered another to Shenzi who was trailing behind him now.
“What do you three want?!” Kopa demanded. Nathari had awoke now, wisely choosing to stay underneath Kopa’s body.
“You didn’t think we forgot about our little visit a few weeks ago did’ja?” Banzai asked.
“We happened to swing by again and thought we’d say hi and, pop in for a bite!” She laughed.
“You three don’t scare me.” Kopa retorted, letting another low growl escape.
“We got a little debt to settle with Simba and Zira, and I think you’d make the perfect payment.” Shenzi explained. Kopa turned to her now.
“Wait Zira? You know Zira?” He asked.
“Of course we know Zira, that psychotic Scar humper chased us out of the outlands!” Banzai noted.
“Damn right, and when we try to go to the elephant graveyard, oh what do we see?”
“Simba’s ugly mug, chasing us out of his “Pridelands.” Last time I checked that was our turf!” Banzai stated.
“You’re not friends with Zira then are you?” Kopa asked.
“Hell no! We’d give a week’s worth of food to see her pushin up daisies.” Shenzi replied. Kopa gave a cozy little smile before replying.
“How bout knowing she got tossed into a river, smashed against rocks for days. Then found by a certain lion and torn into a billion tiny pieces?” He suggested. Ed started laughing at the thought. Shenzi and Banzai stopped circling for a moment.
“Now that would be news!” She nodded.
“Tell me about it, a certain lion tearing her into- hey! You’re that certain lion?” He asked dumbfounded.
“She was the one who did this.” He answered. Gesturing to his scars across his body. Shenzi and Banzai’s eyes went wide.
“Whoa, and I thought we got it bad.” She said examining his wounds.
“Yeah no kiddin.” He agreed.
“Look, if you’re not with her, then maybe we got off on the wrong paw here. I’m Kopa.” He greeted warmly extending his paw. “This here is Nathari, he’s a friend of mine.”
“I know who you are, Kopa. We we’re still getting smacked around by your daddy when you were little.” Shenzi replied. Sighing he lowered his paw to the ground.
“I… Wouldn’t know.” He confessed. “When she did this, it was too much for me. I died in my father’s arms. I don’t know how, but I woke up. For a long time, I didn’t have any memories of my family at all.”
“What do you mean, no memories?” She asked.
“When I died, they were taken from me. I’ve started remembering things lately though. But there are lots of little things that are long gone. Maybe seeing you was one of them, cause aside from a few weeks ago, I don’t recognize you at all.” Shenzi slowly approached him, she leaned in eye first stopping not an inch from his face.
“You telling the truth fuzz for brains?” She asked sternly. Shaking his head he gently pushed her back.
“Look, how bout a deal?”
“A deal?” She asked.
“What kinda deal?” Banzai questioned.
“You guys look hungry. How bout I hunt us all something to eat, I’ll share it but in exchange, you’ll at least hear me out.” He suggested.
“Wait wait wait, you toddle off and hunt, bring it back. Share it, and all we gotta do is believe your story?” She asked.
“That and not force me to rip you apart.” He added.
“Sounds fine to me!” Banzai agreed.
“Me to, but we’ll watch over the kid here. Collateral in case you decide to double cross us!” She insisted.
“Yeah, ain’t the first time we’ve been had by a lion.”
“Look I promise, I won’t double cross you ok?” Kopa insisted. Getting off of Nathari he protested a bit, not wanting Kopa to leave him alone with the hyena’s. He could hear the feint whimper and turned around. “Look, you’ll be fine ok?”
“Don’t like hyena’s.” He whispered under his breath.
“Don’t worry, if they hurt you.” Kopa began to say, turning towards Shenzi. “They’ll get what I gave Zira, and then some.” He warned. Walking past her he glanced down and caught her eye.
“Don’t blow it kid.” She whispered. Kopa didn’t give any acknowledgement as he passed her. He followed the stream for a bit, sulking through the muddy shores for a while until he found the break in the trees. Passing through he was met by the rushing smell of wet grass from the rain soaked savannah. Heading north along the tree line he looked for anything of interest. He caught sight of the end of the game trail his former pride was near and headed toward it. It was a long trail, Kopa had run for hours the previous night and still the herds walked this during the long weeks of the dry season. A few buffalo were gathered together nearby, grazing on the grass and feeding their young. Kopa wasn’t interested in the small, he needed something to feed himself, Nathari and three starving hyena’s. Big, was definitely on the menu. He stayed low, and stalked them for a good while, watching the families move and separate. A large buck had broken away and started grazing on some of the grass not far from Kopa. He could feel the wind blowing across him; with the buck ahead he wouldn’t catch his scent. He moved in as close as possible without disturbing the creature. He didn’t want to risk startling it and having to track them down again. There was enough distance between his current home and the game. The chance came; he gave him his backside, leaving him blind to Kopa’s attack. He took the chance, rushing in he pounced the bull, and sunk his claws into his back. Squealing it tried desperately to toss him off, and it worked. Kopa lunged in once more, grabbing for the throat attempting to choke off the beast. It was working, huffing and puffing it tried to shake him off, or catch him with a horn. Kopa’s claws dug in tight, sinking his fangs through further and further ever so slowly. Kopa’s heart sank though as he remember how this game could fight back. The trampling of hooves was coming from behind, but he couldn’t let go. He decided he’d wait for the right moment, and strafe forcing them to hit each other. He was ready, listening to each clamor, until something even more unexpected occurred, the roar of a lion came behind him. Another squeal confirmed the charging buffalo had been dealt with. The big one was finally losing strength in his jaws, falling to the ground Kopa waited until his breathing stopped. Turning around he discovered what had dealt with the other charging buffalo. It was Keyah, scrapping with it, clawing and roaring she managed to scare him off. Kopa’s jaw dropped, he couldn’t believe it. Watching the beast run away, he planted himself on his backside in awe.
“Keyah?” He stammered. Turning to him she didn’t smile. Her face was still pained, but only one thing could remedy it. Gasping she rushed to him. Kopa got up and ran to her as well. Breathing heavily, each step felt labored as she lunged for him. Kopa caught her and fell to his back, holding her tight in his arms.
“Kopa!” She cried, throwing her head under his chin, burying her muzzle in his mane. She began crying softly; Kopa groomed her back with his paw while keeping a good squeeze on her with the other.
“You came?” He asked. Sniffling she pounded his chest with a good smack.
“Don’t you ever leave me again!” She demanded, resuming her crying.
“I won’t ever. I promise.” He swore, kissing her head he picked himself up along with her. Sitting up she stayed close to his body, her head under his she leaned to his chest. “Does this mean, they’re coming to?” He asked.
“No, I deserted them.” She answered. Gently he pushed her back to meet her face; he was surprised she really abandoned them. “My place is with you. If they don’t want you, then they can’t have me either.” Kopa immediately pulled her back into his arms. She smiled, feeling his mane and warm paws on her body once more.
“I love you.” He whispered. “I love you so much.”
“I love you to. I’ll never leave you.” She stammered. Jumping into his lips she held fast, moaning as she felt the breath from his muzzle on hers. She was so relieved to find him; she let her lips caress his as they fell to the warmth of each other’s embrace.

Having finished eating, Amri gathered Ni and Asani to him. Ni was eager to leave and find his little brother, surprisingly Asani seemed quite renewed. Having slept the night, some of his vigor had most assuredly returned. Amri still carried the same grim face he had worn the day before and earlier this morning.
“I’ve taken a great deal of time to reflect on yesterday’s events.” Amri began. “Why I decided what I did. What I could have done to keep Kopa and Keyah with us. I think, my decision was fair but not right.”
“Little late for that.” Ni quipped. Asani smacked his side and glared.
“Shut the fuck up and let him talk.” He snapped.
“Enough!” Amri barked. The two traded one more glare then returned their attention to Amri. “I stayed up, talking with Saeska and reflecting on the choices made yesterday. She pointed something out to me, something so small it had never crossed my mind. It made me think that perhaps, even though I am not that old I have begun to think too deeply on things that I cannot see things for what they are. Kopa’s place in our pride was not something to be voted or determined by his actions. He has been part of our pride since the day I brought him home wrapped in those blood soaked leaves. There is no question of that anymore, yesterday’s events proved that beyond a shadow of a doubt.”
“So then why the vote?” Ni asked.
“To make sure he didn’t end up being a suckling waste?” Asani replied.
“To a degree, yes Asani. To make sure he didn’t simply prove to be a hindrance. But it has been proven that he is just as competent and crucial as we had hoped. Ni?” Amri asked, looking to him.
“Yes?”
“I would like you to train with me. Not in combat you have proven competent enough at that, I feel you should be next to guide our family.” He stated. Ni was startled, Asani’s jaw dropped.
“Whoa whoa whoa, you’re not stepping down!” Asani argued.
“No, not yet. But Ni saw more clearly then I, well at least yesterday.”
“Amri, I’m honored but. I thought Asani was next to lead us after you.” Ni replied.
“Fuck that, I don’t want to lead.”
“You see the reasoning behind my choice.” Amri said with a smirk. “I had thought of Asani, but I know him to well now. He’s an astounding fighter, but gives little forethought to guiding our family.”
“It’s not that.” Asani admitted. “I just don’t handle the mushy crap like this well. I don’t care for the little details like you two do. I fight for this pride because it’s my family, and I love my family. I’m just lazy as fuck and don’t care to settle little squabbles.”
“Haha precisely.” Amri agreed. “Now, I’ve reached my decision. My decision is Kopa is part of our pride, and damn the vote I made that condemned him. But this does not mean I intend to back out from my promise. My word is my bond, and I will drag that boy back to his Pridelands by the tail screaming if I have to!”
“He’s said multiple times, he doesn’t want to go home.” Ni added.
“It’s not his home. Wherever we go, is his home. We are his family, this “King” will recognize this or I will fight to the end to defend him!” Amri cheered. “We will not deny a father the right to his son. But neither will I stand by and let this family he has come to love become a fading memory.”
“Damn right!” Ni cheered.
“Sounds good!” Asani agreed.
“Fetch the girls, and get Saeska and Kinu on their trails. Today, we hunt for Keyah and Kopa!”

The weight of the buffalo shared across their backs, Kopa and Keyah approached the forest following along the stream. Kopa had begun explaining the night’s events to her. The finding of the boy and now in the morning the hyena’s who had discovered them. She grew concerned for Nathari’s injuries, wondering how long he had been alone, unable to clean the wound. As they approached they heard the strangest noises, seemingly like playing coming from where they had camped. Nathari and Banzai were sitting across from each other. Banzai had his paws atop Nathari’s and appeared to be playing a game. Nathari kept snapping his paws from under and swatting Banzai’s, forcing him to yelp a little each time.
“Too slow bro, wanna try again?” He asked. Ed laughed hysterically as Banzai leered at him.
“Hey, shut up!” He barked knocking him over with an errant blow from his hind leg. “Again kid, I got it this time.”
“Hey guys.” Kopa greeted. Banzai turned and looked to them as they hefted the buffalo in. Nathari exploited the opportunity and swatted his paws once more. He yelped and growled a bit before approaching Kopa.
“Who’s this furball?” He demanded.
“This furball, is his mate!” Keyah quickly replied.
“I knew it! You brought reinforcements!” Shenzi proclaimed. Kopa shook his head eager to calm her down.
“No no, it’s nothing like that. Look I’ll explain everything, over breakfast of course.” Banzai, Ed and Nathari ogled at the big juicy kill.
“It’s a little late for breakfast, I think I’ll have the leg for brunch and a few good bites of torso for dinner!” Banzai drooled, fawning over the meat. Kopa helped Nathari over to creature and settled him down.
“Dig in guys!” Kopa declared, the hyena’s didn’t hesitate to dive into the meat. Keyah and Kopa began gnawing away as well. After about an hour or so of picking a few of the bones, the group settled and relaxed. Kopa and Keyah took a few sips from the stream, while Nathari and the hyena’s laid entranced in food coma’s on their side.
“Best, meal, ever!” Nathari proclaimed with a burp.
“Nice one kid!” Banzai jeered. “Check this!” He answered with a belch of his own. Nathari laughed rolling back onto his stomach.
“Wait for it, wait for it.” Nathari encouraged, seemingly swallowing air. An enormous gut busting burp, bellowed from his mouth, echoing even through the trees. All three of the hyena’s hysterically laughed along with Nathari. Amidst the laughter, Nathari forgot about the wound on his back. Cringing rather suddenly, breaking his laughing he groaned as it ached.
“What’s up with you?” Shenzi asked.
“It’s the cut on my back.” He reminded her.
“It’s ok; I’ll give it a good clean later.” Keyah suggested. Shenzi shook her head.
“You gotta be kiddin me? You see his back? That things gonna turn black and kill em if we don’t do something a little more than lick it clean.”
“What did you have in mind?” Keyah wondered.
“I’ll go look for a little something. You guys just hang here.” She insisted, rushing off into the forests. Keyah smiled at Nathari and began examining his injury.
“It’s pretty rough. How long has it been untreated?”
“A couple days.” He replied quietly. She fawned over it a bit more then met him face to face. She carefully handled his head moving it left to right and gazed into each of his eyes. Turning his head to the side, she pawed through the thin mane on his neck and head. His coat was in good condition, the light brown color and blonde mane growing in blended well. It was hard to tell between the fur and budding mane due to the fine width of his fur.
“What are you doing?” He wondered.
“Just looking for any other health problems you might have.” She answered, grabbing his ear and taking a quick look inside. She pulled him back around meeting his face once more. She placed her paw on his chin, attempting to draw his mouth open. Nathari complied and she examined his teeth, tongue and throat. Everything seemed ok, save for a few lingering pieces of meat still stuck in his teeth. Satisfied she closed his mouth and gave him a gentle pat on the head. “Looking good kido, how old are you exactly anyway?” Nathari thought about it, scratching the back of his head for a while unsure of the exact age.
“Wet season is coming soon right?” He asked, pausing his scratching. Keyah nodded and he was able to come up with a number. “A year and maybe three months? Or four, I’m not really sure but around there.”
“Oh yeah?” She smiled. “You’re just a little younger then Saeska.”
“Who’s that?” He questioned eagerly. Keyah’s smile slowly broke as her head fell.
“Oh right. Sorry, that’s our other family.” She sadly replied.
“Not that it’s any of my business I guess, but what happened?” He asked shyly. “Kopa, hasn’t told me much about it.”
“No, I haven’t.” He agreed. Banzai and Ed joined in as well, crawling over they took a cozy spot next to Nathari, ready to hear the tale. “I guess we should explain it huh.”
“Couldn’t hurt.” Banzai said nodding. Kopa took a long deep breath staring at the ground. “Where do I start?” Taking his time, he explained the events up to yesterday afternoon. How he was attacked by Zira, discovered by Amri and taken to safety. Shenzi and Banzai took a particular interest in the story since neither of them were fond of Zira. As Shenzi returned with a few flowers Kopa carried on, telling them of how his place in the pride was put to a vote and he was turned down. How he found Nathari by the stream and now to where they were.
“Hmm.” Shenzi pondered for a moment. Kopa took an interest and leaned in.
“What’s up?”
“You know something, we heard about you disappearing but, we didn’t think you were killed. Simba went real soft on us after, but it was the other lionesses that chased us off.” She explained.
“So?” Kopa wondered.
“So. I think your dad hurt pretty bad from you dying. If you’re just fine, why don’t you wanna go home? Heck I would.” She asked.
“It’s like this.” Kopa started once more. “If I go home, everyone will be happy to see me right? Everyone will be glad that I’m back and will probably want me to rejoin the family. All’s well that ends well, sort of. But when my memories first started coming back, and I thought about going home, the first thing I thought of was what would happen with Keyah and Amri. They had raised me as family, they wanted me to stay. My dad was kind hearted but, I doubt he would let an entire other pride live within our home so, in the end I’d have to choose. If I went home, just to break their hearts again and leave it would kill them. But then again, if I choose to stay home, I’d be leaving the only family I had known for the last two years. It’s not fair to ask me to do that. So I won’t do it. My dad found me dead, he believes I’m gone. He keeps me in his heart, and I know he and mother are in mine. I’ll never forget them; to them I’m always with them now. I think it’s best this way.”
“But kid, you ain’t with those other lions anymore. So what are you going to do now?” She asked. Kopa hung his head once more with a heavy sigh. It’s true, they had abandoned him. Without the option of being able to go back to them, it might be best just to go home after all. Kopa hated the idea though; he knew it would stir up a lot of trouble with his return as well as joy. What if his father wasn’t even alive anymore? Or his mother? What if his sister didn’t recognize him and they were forced to leave? So many conflicts just from the idea of returning to the pridelands. At the same time though, there was a bit of hope that just perhaps, his family was all alive, healthy and happy just to see him again. Kopa needed to make a decision. He glanced to Nathari and to his mate. I have to do what’s best for both of them as well, he thought. That means going somewhere safe to survive. There’s not much better place then with them, so now it was painfully clear.
“I suppose since the choice has been made for me, I’ll go home. If it’s just us, maybe he’ll let us all stay.” Kopa suggested. Shenzi and Banzai shook their heads.
“Nuh uh, maybe you three, but not us kido. You’re daddy can’t stand us, never could.” She stated firmly.
“Yeah, neither could Mufasa.” Banzai added.
“Exactly, and after we got double-crossed by Scar, there ain’t nothing for us in those Pridelands other than a big fat pain in the butt!”
“What if we talk to him?!” Keyah interjected. Shenzi and Banzai were surprised but not convinced.
“Good luck with that idea.” Shenzi dismissed.
“I’m serious! Maybe Kopa’s dad will listen to us, especially if you help bring his beloved son home.” She suggested with a smirk. Shenzi and Banzai thought it over as well, it might be possible.
“Eh, maybe.” Banzai admitted. “But it’s a long shot to say the least.”
“Yeah, and I don’t deal in long shots anymore.” Shenzi agreed. Picking up the flowers she had brought in before she lumbered over to Nathari and dropped one before him. “Eat up kid.”
“Uhh..” Nathari hesitated. “What is it?”
“Heck if I know what it’s called. But the flower helps cleanse infections in your body.” She retorted. “We used to have to use that stuff a lot. Filthy lion claws diggin into us every week.” Nathari bat it around a bit, still very hesitant to eat it. Leaning down he gave a quick sniff and swiftly withdrew with a gag.
“Aww that smells gross!” He protested. Keyah leaned into Kopa’s ear and whispered.
“I’ve got an idea; you’ll have to forgive me for it ok?”
“Ok I guess.” Kopa agreed quietly. Gracefully she sashayed over to him, flicking her tail and settling across from him. Moaning she placed the flower in her paw.
“I think it’s rather pretty don’t you?” She asked him. Nathari stammered a bit before answering.
“Yeah, I think so.”
“Gorgeous like your eyes.” She flirted shamelessly. Nathari’s face turned dopey as she leaned in for a kiss. Giving him a quick slap of her lips his eyes went wide in astonishment. Kopa was a little upset at first, but recalling on the last time he and Saeska were alone, he was quick to forgive. Pulling away, Nathari’s jaw slacked as he giggled from the kiss. Keyah immediately slapped the flower to his mouth with a devious smirk. “Swallow it.” She commanded with a chuckle. Nathari cringed at the plants fowl taste but complied eventually after a few forced chews. Kopa actually started laughing a bit as well.
“Nice trick.” He complimented. Keyah gave him a quick smile and turned back to Nathari.
“Feel better?” She asked. Gagging again he shook his head.
“Still tasted awful.” He complained.
“Don’t worry.” Shenzi laughed. “It’s worse on the way out.” He cringed once more and lowered his head between his paws. Keyah gave him a quick pat on the head and found her way back to Kopa. Wrapping a paw around her she giggled leaning into him.
“Mad?” She asked.
“No, that was worth the look on his face after.” Kopa laughed again.
“Now brace yourself kido.” Shenzi advised. Picking up the other flower she began chewing on it as well. “Gotta get a bit of the juice from this into the cut as well.” She explained, muffled by the flower tossing about in her mouth. Nathari’s ears folded as he sunk his head down. He wasn’t eager to have his wounds bathed again.
“You’ll be fine Nathari, it’ll feel so much better after.” Kopa encouraged.
“I hope you’re right Kopa.” He called back. Shenzi began bathing the wound, rapidly licking along the surface of the scab. Nathari yelped a little at first but remained surprisingly quiet and compliant during the rest of her cleaning. Keyah rushed over to observe, she was very interested to see how immediate the results were. The flower seemed to help peel off the scab when mixed with Shenzi’s saliva and seemingly made it glossy and thick. As it coated the wound, Nathari could feel a warm tingle all along the length of his injury. It was very soothing, a significant relief compared to the ache and stinging pain from the previous days. As she finished she spat up the rest of the flower in her mouth. She agreed with Nathari on one thing, the taste was absolutely awful. Making a break for the water she cleaned out her mouth and returned to join the others.
“Bleh. Lion fur and that flower.” She commented.
“Impressive, how did you know about that flower?” Keyah asked.
“Rafiki showed us ages ago, long purple leafy flower. Bitter taste, that’s the one to clean wounds.” She explained.
“Yeah, he didn’t like us much but when we got hurt during Scar’s rule he showed us a thing or two.” Banzai agreed.
“Heh, used to be my nickname.” Kopa added.
“Ooo, Simba would probably kill the lion who called ya that.” Shenzi laughed.
“I kind of stopped hearing it after a while, there was only really one person that called me that.” Kopa explained.
“Asani’s such an ass.” Keyah joked. Kopa shyly laughed and hung his head. After having a good chuckle she turned to look to him. Worried she swung her head under and started to purr. “You ok my love?” She asked softly.
“Yeah.” He perked up. “I’ll be fine just, kinda tired.” Moaning she leaned in harder to his chest. Bringing his head down she gave his cheek and lip a soft lick.
“I think I know what could help you rest.” She suggested. Nuzzling her hard he returned the favor and licked her cheek.
“I’d like that.” He whispered, kissing the base of her ear and working down to her neck. Breaking away she flicked his nose with her tail and led him on. Nathari saw them leaving and started turning to them. Shenzi jumped in to intervene however and guided his face away from them.
“Whoa whoa whoa little guy, that there is some mature material.” She advised, settling down beside them. Banzai settled as well while Ed simply flopped to the ground and fell asleep. Nathari chuckled covering his mouth.
“Does he always do that?” He asked Shenzi.
“Mmhmm. Sometimes doesn’t even make it onto his back. Crazy thing can sleep standing up.” Nathari laughed again and placed his head between his paws. Closing their eyes they fell to sleep, letting the afternoon sun slip by and settle into sky.

Kopa’s eyes blinked as he stirred from sleep. The sounds of the late evening were all about him. The wind was cutting through the trees gently stirring the leaves as crickets and dozens of other bugs sang of the nights approach. With Keyah’s arms wrapped tightly around him, her head resting on his neck, back in her usual place he closed his eyes once more. A feint woof could be heard through the trees. It was the strangest sound to him, yet almost familiar. Patiently he waited to see if it would return. Keeping a fast hold on Keyah he could hear it again, however this time it seemed much more like a brief roar then some odd woofing sound. His eyes flung open.
“It couldn’t be.” He whispered. Thinking it might be Amri or Ni, anyone from his pride really. But the thought also dawned on him of another lion, maybe a rival. Or worse, it could be the one who challenged them before. He released his grip on Keyah and lowered her to the ground, tapping her side and face gently he stirred her awake.
“What. What is it?” She asked quietly. Kopa hushed her and leaned close to her ear.
“Were not alone. Get the others up; I’m going to check it out.” He informed her. Another low roar bellowed through the trees. Keyah heard it as well, as her heart raced she swiftly rose to her feet and rushed to the others. Kopa followed the sound as best he could and cautiously made his way through the forest. Pausing once more, he awaited the sound. As the roar came again it was close, a little closer then he would have liked. Kopa darted off and tried his best to get downwind of the sound. Climbing over a fallen tree, he saw a shape move through the thicket ahead. Staying low he moved in closer trying to catch wind of what it was. Ever so carefully he crept up a few dozen feet from the shape. As a gust of wind kicked up, the scent blew by his nose, a scent that was instantly familiar.
“Ni?” He said aloud. The shape stopped a moment now.
“Kopa? Is that you?” Ni shouted back.
“Over here!” He called back. Ni darted through the bush and saw him. Blowing a smile across his face he ran to him.
“Kopa thank the heavens!” He cried out, jumping into him he held Kopa tight. Kopa held fast as they tackled each other to the ground. Ni was laughing, so relieved to have found him at last. “Ah kido, when we saw the forest up ahead and your trail leading there. Thought it was over, you were long gone.” He confessed letting him up. “Are you ok? Is Keyah with you?” He asked.
“I’m fine Ni, I’m fine. Yeah Keyah’s camped over by the stream with me, we’re all good.” He explained. Swinging his head back again he breathed yet another sigh of relief.
“Oh thank goodness. You had us really worried.”
“Us.” Kopa repeated, lowering his head. “You mean your pride.”
“Hey, I won’t have that.” He argued, picking his chin up with a paw. “Listen we got a lot to talk about ok? But the short version is Amri wants you back, we all do. And something tells me you want to be with us again don’t you?”
“Well of course but-“
“But nothing.” Ni interrupted. “I’ll go get the others. You said follow the stream right?” Kopa nodded hesitantly and returned his head down. Ni smiled and grabbed him once again, holding him tight. “Trust me on this one ok. I promise you we’ll set it all right. I’m not losing my little brother again, got it?”
“I got it.” Kopa agreed holding him as well. As Ni let him go he gave a quick smile before darting off, back though the forest.
Arriving back at his campsite Kopa found everyone huddled together and wide awake. Nathari was sitting aside Shenzi while Keyah closed off the other side alongside Ed.
“Kopa, who was it?” Keyah asked nervously.
“It was Ni.” He said letting another smile escape. “Seems they didn’t want us to go after all.” Keyah hung her head low and sighed.
“Great, so back to the good old days where I can’t be with you.” She moaned. Kopa lunged in picking up her head and found her lips. Giving her a long soft kiss he moved just far enough away to release.
“That is not going to happen. Us being together is not up for discussion. We’re mates or we don’t join them, and that’s final.” He stated firmly. Smiling she leaned in, stealing another kiss before Kopa took to his feet. “They will be coming along the stream soon. Stay with the hyena’s so that they won’t hurt them.” Keyah nodded and softly explained to them what was going on. Kopa a few paces away watched along the stream for any signs of movement. He was nervous, yet still excited. It had only been a day and yet, it felt so much longer. Taking their time Kopa took to sitting instead of standing in wait. Shenzi began tapping her tail in the dirt, growing impatient.
“They are coming before we die of old age right?” She joked.
“I would hope.” Kopa replied looking back. A few minutes later, the first signs of movement were showing. He watched eagerly as the shape moved closer and closer.
“Along the stream?” He heard Asani call.
“Yeah.” He could hear Ni reply, faintly behind him. Kopa grew a smirk and decided to call back.
“Hey, by the tree! Use your damn eyes Asani!” He called out, laughing as he recalled him saying that to him weeks ago.
“Yeah he must be over here, I smell a lot of pussy up ahead.” He replied audibly. Knocking a large shrub down, Asani revealed himself and started towards him. “Oh, now I can see a pussy to.” He joked.
“Is that so? Did you catch your reflection in the stream?” Kopa fired back. Asani laughed as he closed the gap between them.
“Good to see our prides official dumbass is in one piece.” He added patting Kopa’s shoulder. Asani turned to the hyena’s, Nathari and Keyah. “Whoa, what the hell.”
“Easy Asani, there all with me ok. Don’t hurt them.”
“You know that little one is from that pride that nearly-“
“I know, I know. He’s fine, I’ll explain when everyone gets here.” Kopa insisted. Asani shook his head and accepted his answer for now. He gave Keyah a brief greeting but didn’t acknowledge the others. Keyah didn’t afford him much greeting back, she was still very much upset with him and Amri over what caused all of this in the first place. Kopa watched as Asani settled down then turned back to the stream. As he turned he met Ni nearly face to face.
“Hey!” Kopa greeted warmly.
“Good to see ya little bro.” He answered happily, nuzzling him briefly. Ni looked at the crew settled before him astonished. “Whoa, didn’t waste any time finding new friends I see.” He added, taking his time he greeted each of them and gave a quick hug to Keyah as well. Another large shape was coming now, as it passed over the shrubs Kopa could feel his heart race. Amri and Hakima were coming now, joined quickly by Saeska and Kinu.
“Kopa!!!” Saeska nearly screamed at the top of her lungs. Bolting over she tackled him to the ground and hugged him tight. “MMM It’s soo great to see you again! Are you ok!? Did you eat? And who are those guys!?” She bombarded. Kopa laughed as he brought himself back up to his feet.
“I’m fine, I’ll explain when everyone settles in.”
“Kk sounds great!” She happily accepted bounding over to meet everyone. Kopa was given a less violent tackle as he turned back by Kinu. Holding him tight for a moment she pat his cheek.
“I’m glad you’re ok.”
“Thanks sis.” He said softly.
“Where’s my slippery sister?” She asked turning away from him. She rushed over to Keyah and gave her a big hug, and a good swat on the arm. “You ever leave me alone again I’m going to bust your tail!” She threatened jokingly. Watching Amri and Hakima approach now he waited as they took a few steps from him. Hakima was the first to grab a hold of him and hold him tight. Kopa wrapped his arms around her as well and squeezed a good hug from her.
“I’m so very happy to see you again boy.”
“It’s good to see you to.” Releasing him she joined her daughter, nodding to the others as she passed. It was Amri’s turn now, and Kopa wasn’t sure what to expect. He reached for him, but Kopa flinched a bit. Amri paused and lowered his paw to the ground with a sigh.
“Kopa. There is much we need to talk about. Believe me I understand you are upset with me.” Hanging his head now Kopa nodded.
“Yeah.”
“But you have no idea how relieved I am to see you. Everyone was so very worried. And right now, I would just like to hold you a moment, please.” He pleaded. Kopa didn’t hesitate this time. Lunging in he nearly threw himself at Amri. Wrapping him up he held him fast, stroking his back while he rocked him. “I’m just glad your alright boy.” He whispered.
“I’m glad you’re here to.” Releasing him Amri recomposed himself and turned to the others that were huddled alongside Keyah.
“So, I think some introductions are in order yes?” He asked.
“Sure.” Kopa agreed. “Guys, this is Shenzi, Banzai, Ed and Nathari. I met Nathari just last night, he was wounded near the stream so I helped him recover a bit. Shenzi and the others showed up this morning but, I managed to talk things over with them and they even helped Nathari here with some medicines they learned about from back home. Guys, this is Amri, the leader of my old pride. The lion with the short mane is my best friend and big brother, Ni. That’s Hakima she’s about the wisest lioness I’ve ever met, that’s her daughter Saeska beside her. Kinu over there is Keyah’s sister, she’s really nice once you to get to know her. And the asshole with the healing gashes on his legs is Asani.” Amri gave him a little smack for the asshole remark and chuckled.
“So you made friends with some dogs and a busted cub huh?” Asani sarcastically commented. “What a crew to replace us.”
“The busted cub doesn’t crack stupid remarks like that at least.” Keyah retorted.
“Shame, does he even talk?” He asked staring down at him.
“I talk just fine, I just don’t think I like you.” Nathari answered.
“Ah, another member to the pussy club.” Asani cracked again. Keyah snapped up and barked a good growl at him.
“Shut your trap you arrogant pig!” Hakima rushed up to settle her down.
“Easy girl, easy.”
“You should watch who you call pig, deserter.”
“Silence Asani!” Amri and Hakima shouted in sync.
“What is the matter with you?!” Amri demanded.
“Excuse me for not being as grateful to see them as you. Kopa’s reasons I can kind of understand, but her? She wants to run off and abandon us, let her.” He stated.
“I was hoping this could stay on a more positive note for longer but clearly, we need to clear things up here first.” Amri said with a sigh. Ni rose up and joined aside Amri. “Asani, Ni, and Kopa let us talk for a while. My love, can you tend to the boy, see how he’s doing?”
“Certainly.” Hakima agreed. As Asani rose up to join them, he stopped by Keyah and leaned in closely.
“You’d be a little pissed off if someone you loved said fuck you, pig before abandoning them.” He whispered. She was a little shocked; she didn’t realize he was awake enough to hear her. Still, she kept her cool and replied.
“If you loved me you would have never parted me from my mate. You abandoned the lion that saved your life without a second thought; keep that in mind when you whine about me deserting.”
“Asani! Don’t start with her now!” Amri called back. “Let’s go!” He gave her one good glare and then joined the others. They took a few good paces to take themselves out of earshot and settled. Saeska walked over to Keyah and glared down at her angrily. Keyah was baffled at first, but as Saeska turned her cheek briefly, reminding her of the hit from before; she bowed her head.
“Fair’s fair right.” Keyah stated rising up. “Guys, whatever happens next just let it go ok?” She told everyone. Most everyone nodded who was paying attention and looked away. Saeska wound up ready to strike as Keyah cringed, slamming her eyes tight bracing for the blow. As her paw came down, it wrapped around her neck as Saeska’s body swung in for a hug. Surprised, Keyah opened her eyes, holding her in returned and giving her cheek a good nuzzle. “Forgive me?” She begged. Saeska bobbed her head before giving her answer.
“Maybe.” She joked. Keyah smiled and turned toward the water, heaving a sigh of relief. Saeska watched as she passed her by, dipping her head toward the water. With a quick snap, Saeska caught Keyah’s tail with a swift bite. She shrieked in pain swinging around, checking her tail as it stung horribly.
“Now, you’re forgiven!” Saeska helplessly laughed at Keyah cringing from her bitten tail.
“Remind me not to hurt you ever again.” Keyah suggested, giving her tail a quick lick.
“I’ll have to pick something more sensitive if you do.” She agreed with a wink. The two laughed and took a drink from the stream together.

Amri looked to Kopa with admiration as Asani gradually lowered himself down. All of them rested across from each other and traded glances before Amri cleared his throat, ready to begin.
“So, Kopa. There is much we need to discuss right now, but I think first and foremost I just want you to know how sorry I am for yesterday.”
“I’m sorry to. I shouldn’t have blown up like I did. I really wanted to join the pride; you have to understand how much that meant to me.” Kopa said eagerly.
“We had decided to weigh your place in our pride with a vote about a month after we found you. Asani expressed concerns that you might end up weakened, sick or unable to perform any duties within the pride. He was right, and he wasn’t alone in that thinking, Hakima worried about this to because of how affectionate Keyah was with you early on, that’s why we went with this idea.”
“Obviously, you’ve lived up to what has been asked of you Kopa.” Ni added in quickly.
“Yes, exactly.” Amri agreed. “You have not only hunted, but you have defended us from a takeover attempt, and rather large one at that.”
“Why are you trying to save the little one Kopa?” Asani asked, cutting off Amri before he could continue.
“To be honest, I really didn’t think you guys were coming for me. I saw him there, wounded and begging to die. He’s barely adolescent and he’s begging to die, I felt so horrible for him that I had to help.” Kopa explained.
“Just a few days ago he was trying to kill you, maybe rape your girlfriend as a reward after.” Asani argued.
“That kid, Nathari is his name right?” Ni asked. Kopa nodded and let him continue. ”Had no chance of defeating Kopa, I really wonder why the big guy even brought him.”
“Nathari told me a little more about Ezeamaka. That lion is psychotic. He forced Nathari to hold down a fellow pride member while he murdered him, then turned around and cut him so he could die slowly. Asani, I don’t think he’s any kind of threat anymore. His old pride tried to kill him and he’s been growing attached to me. I’ll watch out for him for a while, we’ll see how he does.”
“Were getting off topic here.” Amri interrupted. “Asani, the boy is in Kopa’s care alone for now. Let it be at that.” Asani accepted his answer and let him continue. “I’m going to make this clear Kopa. As far as I’m concerned you are part of this pride, without question. The vote was a good precaution, but it was not needed and the decision made from it I’m throwing out. If you would like to come back to us, we would be honored to have you once again.”
“I have a condition.” Kopa replied. “Keyah and I are mates, either we both come back and we’re allowed to be together. Or we disappear again.” Amri happily nodded, giving his approval of Kopa’s terms.
“Of course boy. Understand this though Kopa, if you return to us, we are going to return with you to the Pridelands.”
“But, you know what will happen.” He protested.
“No, you are one of our pride. I will not tolerate you being taken from us. I will honor my word to bring you back home, but that does not mean I will allow this kingdom to intimidate us into forfeiting you.” Amri countered.
“How do you plan on doing that?” Kopa asked. He laughed a moment, scratching his chin.
“I’ll wing it.” Amri replied with a grin. “We don’t know what will happen when we get there. The journey itself could prove interesting. Besides, I’m curious as to what actually goes on within this lion kingdom and the circumstances around that fiend lioness’s death. It’s quite the adventure don’t you think?”
“Just, one question.” Asani interrupted. “Where is it?”
“Amri knows, don’t you?” Ni asked.
“Yes and no. I remember where we had camped after we found Kopa. It wasn’t more than a few hours from the Pridelands.” He explained.
“That’s a long walk.” Asani said softly.
“Indeed. About a week or so from here, give or take a few days. It will be worthwhile though, if this king Simba allows us to maybe wait out the wet season there at least.”
“Yeah that’s true.” Asani agreed.
“So Kopa, are we in agreement?” Amri asked him with a smile. Kopa gave his approval and smiled back.
“Glad to be back.” Ni hustled over hugged him briefly. Amri pat Kopa on the back and watched as Asani remained unmoving. Kopa smiled to him, giving a quick chuckle. “Don’t worry, I don’t need a hug from you.”
“I’m glad your back kid, I’m just not looking forward to this trip.” He replied.
“Surprisingly, I am now.” Kopa stated, lowering his head he closed his eyes and smiled. “I’m coming home dad, just wait.”
