Sand Herons bolster a type of micro film of fluid that allows them to effortlessly "swim" though sand and dirt as easily as we move through water. Normally, all that can be seen of one is their head poking up from the soil, both to observe their surroundings and to pluck either small prey or foliage.
They are mostly peaceful and will flee before attempting to fight, and in fact it can be difficult to get close to one in the first place, requiring it to approach you in most situations.
Perhaps today is your lucky day?
