Black Narcissus (1947) uses just makeup and lighting to accentuate the madness of Kathleen Byron's character Sister Ruth to the point that her slow and casual reveal in her final scene will make you jump in your seat.
Or even better, Bela Lugosi's Dracula: using show and light, the film transforms what would have otherwise been hammy overacting into a real sense that this weirdo in a tuxedo is staring straight into your soul.

Coloring and shading (lighting) are just as important to illustrated art as they are to the stage or screen.
