I like to picture Frothy Mugs as a soda jerk with his own soda bar called The Frothy Fountain. Ponyville needs a soda shop. Frothy brews it himself and drinks plenty of it, hence the round belly. The pegasis is Swift Skybreeze.
Fine manufacturing is done by unicorns. Larger construction projects require the strength of earth ponies, and sometimes the lifting capacity of pegasi.
What you should be asking is, why are so many devices built so cumbersome to operate with hooves, whether or not they require unicorn telekinesis in their initial manufacture? (no-prize answer: because the animators want familiar human-centric objects for little kids to identify in the show)
