#7: Bloody Mary

Bloody Mary is the quintessential school yard ghost story, one for which I couldn't do this countdown without because even I got swept into the ambiguous fear of this mirror dwelling horror. I distinctly remember being goaded into trying the old chant in front of a mirror when I was a kid, only to have nothing happen... I'm still not sure if I was upset by that or not. While Jersey Devil is a cryptid I like more, Bloody Mary places high as being one of the one cryptids/legends featured here that I have actual personal experience with. Sure, nothing happened but it's the closest I've got, still the character of Bloody Mary still holds a lot weight even to today and is easily why people have a fear of mirrors. Of course I know that the notion that mirrors being gateways to another realm and summoning spirits via chanting their name multiple times was not started by the myth of Bloody Mary, but it is interesting to see how that's been primarily tacked onto her... well, her and Beetlejuice I guess. Maybe I should have added him too? Nahhh.
