So basically its like almost everything in game or movies or anime or manga or books or anything...
So your a character that can jump in and out of media entertainment either by way of Digivice transport from digimon, nerve gear or augmented reality like Sword art online or Dot.//hack, controlling an avatar AI like normal games where you control a character you make but the only difference is the character is and ai that when not controlled has a digital life of its own, like Mega Man exe/starforce. So you can either control the character and together with the inner AI or when you done the AI is free to roam cyberspace. It's got a safety feature that kicks you out of control if your health is down, meaning its constantly checking you vitals, when you fully integrated into the digital world like digimon transmission or your body is still in the real would with the nerve gear, if your augmented then its mostly for work outs or exercise, if your playing the classic way you character still has an Ai of its own and interacts with you, if you want to become the character while its Ai is still functioning then its like Mega man EXE or Starforce, so either through computer terminals or using an app off your phone with phone data service to "ride the waves"
Now as for what the whole story is is just for now I can say, there are fusions of two and or more chars from different media entertainment series, sometimes being will defuse if they get hurt...but anything in this arena of digital space can fuse with anything, sometimes defusing to let half of being go and have their own life until they fuse with new recruits
Now on the other side of the coin, there's a parallel world thats exactly the same but more for NSFW stuff, so then the ways of entering the digial space this way need special ways. For example, if you got never gear and you want a full experience, you either where a body suit aka Ready Player One or something more like Mewtwo's armor, either old or remix evolution, but something covering the groin or ass or chest, whether your male or female. Not sure if there's a different way for Digivice, or augmented reality, but on the mega man side, i don't think EXE would work but maybe starforce wave transformation transports to the digital plane could bring about something sexual. So if you got the full gear or going all the way in with your body you could partake in NSFW adventures, but you would have to work for it still, plus every NPC has a chance that they'll give you a clone playable character of themselves, not perfect but close, so you can change your ai avatar, plus you can merge personality, but with that it may drop some personality point to include others so as not to glitch out the Ai.
So either way you start out with a basic avatar, then you can start to add things from different media entertainment sources as you collect them, you can try to add your own but it may need a mission/quest done to open them up and you can do as a noob so you don't OP newbies, or if the people are desperate, paywalls, which is understandable but not at first and not a game/program that starts with nothing then asks for money to fill up the game...maybe more like Red Dead Redemtion 2 PS4 disc version or Final Fantasy 7 PS1 disc version, or Mega man X collection, half on the chip and half
