Here's eevee viewport "render" of the progress I've made. Now I have to delete everything and restart because Blender 2.8 is steaming pile of shit and so is the whole shitty fur particle system. >_< In case you're wondering: Yes that is bunch of fur growing on character's root point. FOR SOME REASON. (tried to fix it by doing as was suggested on some old forum post and that just made the fur disappear completely) And yes the material looks like shit but at least it renders in 2 seconds and runs realtime on viewport. And cycles render ran out of memory and crashed everything that was running on my computer.

Also if anyone has some idea on how her "hair" should be combed let me know. I'm starting to think that it should be combed forward from the back of the head / between the ears but that causes stupid line where the fur from the nose ends up going in opposite direction in the middle of her head and that doesn't look right. And combing the nose fur towards the nose feels wrong too. It might be one of those designs that only work in 2d. And the way those hairs go seems to vary a lot in the movie. Kinda annoying.

By first, I think your fur looks correctly ( except the no fur zones of course ) To solve those things about fur angles and quality, I usually watch some good animation movie with good fur in HD (like zootopia or sheep and worlves) to take some ref. I think your fur looks in the right direction for now.

About the material in EEVEE I found something similar to Hair BSDF using a bit of SSS from Principled shader.

Thanks for commenting. Yeah I think I got the normal fur right but those hair tufts on her head are a bit odd since they go in wrong direction and reference shows some of them should start from the side of her head in front of the ear but that doesn't really make any sense when thinking about the direction of the fur on that area. But I think I can just make them look like they are combed forward from between the ears.

I'm using principled shader and if I put sss on it the fur just gets black. But gotta mess around with it. I'm sure I can find some way to make it look better. Going to setup cycles version in the same material though so if better fur is needed switching renderer is enough. Too bad eevee doesn't support transparency on the hair. And when rendered the fur sort of looks like its alpha plane. It sort of looks like layered. Gotta see if I can do something to that. Finally got around to restarting the whole fur setup.

I beg your perdon about SSS, it's true it doesn't affect the hair at all. I only tried eevee with hair one time, and I was messing around. I will stick with 2.79 for some time anyway.

I tried to make it again in 2.8: It helps a lot activate AO in EEVEE ( and Strand Hair, of course). Anyway it doesn't looks so good, like you said.

Yeah I have AO on. It does help a bit. If they would add support for transparency the fur would be much better already. The problem with Cycles is that rendering anything with fur takes ages. Otherwise I wouldn't even bother with Eevee. Although Cycles has pretty bad shadow terminator issue which ruins most renders unless the model is very highpoly.

I will continue in cycles only because the volumetrics ( another missing thing )
Grimm3D

I'm quite sure eevee has volumetrics.

Yeah it have, but only for scene volumetrics. It doesn't process volumetric objects as far like I know. Anyway the unique thing I was to use it is for sperm. I can use SSS like alternative...

I'm curious if you read this , I wait they fixed the problem :

"Cycles

Reduced shadow terminator artifacts for bump mapping with diffuse BSDFs. (Lukas Stockner, Stefan Werner)"

Oh okay. Well maybe sss is good enough. Yeah I read about the fix a while back but at that point they pointed out that this will only fix one problem that causes terminator issues but anything that makes it less ugly is good.

I love the way she is coming out so far although I think she looks better with out the added fur texture, but in over all she looks good  .

Woah! that is one heck of an update!

Hmmm... I was doing quite nice getting fur down in 2.79.  Draw back is my poor comp couldn't handle it and crashed mid renders constantly do to how high settings I did with fur.   I hadn't heard anything about 2.8 having issues with it YET, so good know there is possibly bad to come :(
That being said, I do have a friend with a up to date computer that if you'd like us to try making a fur system using 2.8, I can make the attempt for you.  The final result might be system bogging if not crashing though with settings that'll be used =^.^=;

I might have added too much fur for cycles to handle. Although I'm sure 2.79 could manage much more. Oh well. Was thinking about optimizing fur strand numbers after getting fur done otherwise. Doesn't really matter since I'm restarting the fur anyway.

But yeah tbh the hair system is still as "good" or bad as in 2.79. Only difference is that eevee can render semi-decent fur in few seconds but the basic combing etc is still just as crap as before. Sure it's usable but not really that great.

My computer is actually quite decent so it should be able to handle this stuff. Maybe I just messed up something. Gotta be more careful when setting up the fur again.

Hmm, I don't know what all can be done to fix it.  Fur itself hasn't been to bad on my side other than render times and my personal computer just not able handle anything since starting to die.  You might have a stray Vertex down there, I see fur kind of clumped between he feet.

There isn't any geometry there. It's just object's pivot and apparently that happens sometimes if use modifier stack isn't on (and switching it on at that point broke the fur completely. But yeah maybe my next attempt will be better.

Fur is so finicky in Blender.  It's one feature I'v noticed that they haven't exactly been trying to make it function better on last few versions...
Grimm3D
5 years, 5 months ago
Yeah the main issue is that it can just randomly explode. Although there usually is some reason to it. Usually quite stupid reason though. But if it wasn't so prone to breaking it would be ok.
Furlow

A while back I asked on the forums if they plan to do any work to better fur/hair system.  The response was there wasn't enough demand for it, so they weren't even looking at it and focusing on the other features more.
Grimm3D

Yeah so it seems. But maybe they will get to it eventually.

They did mention that it would have to be Someone to privately fund the work for hair systems. So maybe a kickstarter or go fundme of sorts to try get programmers on the ball to bring the hair up to a higher standards to go along with this whole new Blender?  IDK, I might get lazy butt off ground and put the idea up on the blender forums to see if anyone that knows how to go about it would be willing to take reigns on it =^.^=;  I'm lil on stupid side when comes to organizing such things.

Sorry Blender 2.8 turned out to brick your 3d model. :( That sucks...
Grimm3D

It only destroyed the fur. The model is fine :) I'm redoing the fur and hopefully it won't explode this time.
