It's one of those traditional locker-room tales where you're seen as the loser if you're the only one in tighty whities among a group of boys in boxers. Although, it's significantly worse for Sonic here since he's clearly wearing underoos. Like, even wearing regular briefs would be better here.
Now, I happen to think they're adorable but that's just me.
