Its primary purpose is being a thumbnail for his drum cover of RD_RA, a track by SoGreatAndPowerful that had struck a chord. He gave me the freedom to do just whatever the song inspired, whatever would fit according to artistic intuition and such. So I listened to it and looked up the lyrics proper to get some ideas and went off on it.
Other than getting a chance to draw some nice artsy art for artsy music, it was interesting to work with an image keeping the fact it has to work as a thumbnail in mind. I’ve taken notice that thicker lines are especially effective still being clearly visible at a distance and all, so the style has adapted accordingly. Not that my style didn’t have pretty thick lines already.
I still don’t feel I’ve gotten a proper grasp of backgrounds like these, but I really felt it’d fit well for this image. Mainly I think I’m just really limited with the art style I’ve got going at this point. Works great on characters, but still life? It’s odd. Particularly anything distant. But it’s at least good enough to be worth including to improve the image, especially considering a background is all it’s supposed to be.
I'll edit in a link to the drum cover itself when it's up.
