It wasn't his fault. Phil just wanted to pick up a job that would let him see the world. One with a lot of travel. The NFL only worked once season out of the year and there's only so much training he could do. So why not? Thanato Corp paid decently and let him see the world!
Unfortunately, Thanato Corp had made some enemies in its time...enemies with the means to help undo the progress they had made over the years.
