Yeah, Mobian babies are annoying, sometimes mixed parents follow gender = species like both Sonic and Tails' kids, then you have Jon, who is opposite gender = species. I think it's just luck of the draw myself.
But anywho, this figure looks nice~! There really is a huge improvement between the old and the new and I agree, there definitely needs to be a bicep swivel to make it better.

You know, I've put more thought into it, and I think my thesis might still work, but has exceptions for egg laying types. Perhaps only echidnas hatch out of echidna eggs, but if an Echidna male mated with a non egg laying female the child would be the mother's type, but with only one case I don't have a large enough sample size to draw conclusions.
An alternate theory is that it works like My Little Pony, and the genes for animal type are recessive and dominant, so there's a small chance a child can be ANY animal in the family bloodline (like when Mr. and Mrs. Cake, both earth ponies, had a unicorn and pegasus baby because they had distant ancestors who were those types.)
