This seems to be a reference to an old warning story called the monkey paw. If I recall correctly, at this point in the story, the main character wishes someone they love back to life, however they come back as a monster and try to break down the door. At that point, the main character wishes them back dead again, with their final wish. Been a while since I read it, so may be a little off, but that was the premise.
