The Cascadian wendigo (Canis wendigalis hipsteri) is notoriously elusive, and features prominently in regional indigenous folklore. They can be quickly identified apart from other Canis species with the juvenile deer skulls they are almost always wearing. Over-hunting and loss of habitat have pushed this species to be critically endangered. Conservation efforts have been minimal due to pervasive cultural demonization.
