Yeah, when we are at the point where people are treated like heinous criminals for the opinions they have or other things that actually don't hurt or injure anybody, it's beyond ludicrous. It is such an effective tactic to avoid having to argue ones own case to simply label your opponents as something despicable, so much so that it is now everywhere.
