I've done some reading into that myself, and while I don't agree with using that word in this context, there are certainly times where it's used to self describe.
I'm also fairly certain that the person you responded to was making a joke about Coops over reaction.

What needs to happen is he needs to learn this is not the way to handle things. Perhaps he tries to run from something again and runs straight into a brick wall? XD

River performs at the club in drag, as a dancer. So convincingly that Coop did not realise the ‘girl’ dancer that he had the hots for was a guy. To be fair, River tried to clue him in at the club, with his comment about Coop being, “pretty confident for a straight guy”. But that remark went right over Coop’s head.

You ever see the show My Name is Earl? Cooper making a dash like that reminds me of the pilot episode when Earl and his brother find out a guy they picked on in High School was gay. "I realize now the running wasn't necessary."

Uh-oh, looks like Cooper has a hidden thing for blond-haired, yellow canine guys. I can sympathize, since my fursona had the same problem, from the moment he met
The thing that this suggests that I love is that the rottweiler pieced it together, gets the awkwardness for Cooper and River, but he's cool with it otherwise. Much more comfortable with such things than Cooper is.

Agreed! I love the reaction of Coop’s buddy. He is obviously still stunned by the turn of events, but he is rolling with it beautifully. A good friend.
River looks equally stunned. I am pretty sure they were just thinking of Coop as a ‘friend from work’, and hoping Coop would not be too shocked to see him as a male. They even gave Coop an easy out, by not mentioning how they might know each other. But Coop’s shocked reaction could only mean he was terrified that he had felt so attracted to River as a woman. Hence the, “Should I... go after him?” Comment. Not uncommon in the queer community to encounter someone else who thinks of themselves as straight, and who bolts (or gets defensively hostile) when they realize they are getting turned on by someone of the same sex.
Coop has some definite soul searching to do before he sees River at work again, at their night job as a dancer.

I’m not sure if it’s just me, but River still looks fairly feminine in this picture. Enough so, at least, that you’d think Cooper wouldn’t recognize they aren’t female. I... assume they aren’t a lady, anyway.

River’s unexplained lack of tits and possibly a change in voice would have tipped Coop off.
Based on River’s job interview, and the later snide remark by a more experienced female dancer who addressed them as ‘sir’ despite River convincingly presenting female, I think it is fairly certain River is physically male, and either gay or bi. How they identify on the gender spectrum is still up for grabs. Until that is certain, I will try to use they/them pronouns for River, as I would for gender fluid or gender ambiguous friends who have not yet stated their preferred pronouns.
