Yume and Hunter both have some pretty intense issues when it comes to sensory input.
Yume, being an Espeon, was assaulted with all kinds of traumatic imagery and media in order to boost his empathy, leading to some pretty hardcore PTSD. Being an Espeon has also made his fur incredibly sensitive, so he spends as much as his time physically away from others as he can to rest his frail body and mind. He's taken disassociation to a whole new level, projecting himself outside of his brain to interact with others within their own. He wears a mask so people aren't so creeped out by his glazed over, empty expression if they come across him.
Hunter in the meanwhile was deprived of nearly every single input as possible from a young age, subject to a life of nothingness and darkness. As such, being able to experience all 5 senses is incredibly overwhelming and exhausting to him, so in his downtime he pulls on his own mask to block out sound and sight to relax, a small reprise.
However those things alone was not what evolves Espeons and Umbreons. No, a strong bond of "Friendship" is required. And so the two were allowed to meet within their testing.
Hunter reacted rather violently to being taken out of his deprivation, instantly overwhelmed. The anguished Eevee's raw emotion hitting Yume's empathy hard. Yume was able to calm him down, and a bond was formed in their own way.
Now, the two share a lot of time separate, but together, with Yume's mental self easily passing through walls and the need to be physically seen, joining Hunter in his quiet mind to share in the solitude, away from the pain of Yume's own brain. It's quite likely that the two share stronger feelings than merely friendship. But with how the pair express themselves? No one would ever be able to tell~
