Just a thought... Either she recognizes them as something stolen from her or from someone she knows, a long time ago, or, more likely, she can’t believe the apparent value of the gift. Wouldn’t surprise me if the guy selling them on the street for cheap was offloading stolen goods. But for the tone of the story, more likely she thinks her friend had to have spent way too much money on them.
