Hunter had meant to storm up to his room. There’d been another argument with Dad, who was tipsy and exhausted after doing the late show, and Grampa, who only ever agreed with Dad when he saw an opportunity to berate Hunter.
But Mom was in there, probably to try to continue the argument as Good Cop: Hunter, you need to stop wasting time. Hunter, you need to accept reality. Hunter, you need to either take studying stage magic with your Dad seriously, or find some other career, you can’t keep going on about real magic, there’s no such thing and how about I crush all your other dreams while I’m at it!
So instead of turning at the top of the stairs, he stomped right past his room to the attic. After a good half hour of sulking, in a box of Grampa’s old stuff--stuff that hadn’t been disturbed for decades--he found the book.
If it was what he thought it was, then it didn’t look like he expected. There were numbers and symbols, and a lot of descriptions he didn’t understand but that were phrased more like physics problems or computer code than what a spell should look like. And there were what looked like quotes? Often it didn’t say from who, but even when it did it was from people he’d never heard of, like: “In my world, white fur like ours is an aberration. But he was sure he could figure it out, with time and practice.
