Blind Date (6 of 6)
After a few minutes, Travis opened the door again and started walking back towards Nina. At this point, Nina was slouched forward and she had her hands covering her face, her handkerchief was in her lap. As he got closer, he noticed that Nina was too distracted by her sorrow to actually hear him coming. He went up to the table and slowly maneuvered himself beside her. He could tell she was weeping, but her crying was too tender to be heard, at least not very well. He got a little bit closer and then softly put his hand on the back of her shoulder. He then said to her, “Nina, are you alright?” Nina quickly sat up while gasping; she was obviously surprised. Travis swiftly removed his hand while Nina turned her head to see who spoke to her. When she realized it was Travis, she grabbed her handkerchief and started wiping away her tears. “Y-yes, yes I’m fine.” was her response. “Were you crying?” Travis queried. “No, no I…uh…I just have allergies.” Nina turned away and continued to dry her face. Travis began to speak. “Um…before I end up saying anything stupid, I…just wanted to say I’m sorry.” Nina looked at Travis again. “What for?” she asked. Travis responded to her question. “For everything I guess. I’m sorry for saying all that stupid stuff I said to you earlier. I’m sorry for the way I’ve been acting. I’m sorry for making you feel uncomfortable, and I’m sorry for…well, I guess you get the idea.” Nina sat silently as tears collected below her eyes. “Um…anyway, I know I probably don’t deserve a second chance but could we maybe…start over? I…I really want to get to know you better and I really want this to work out. I just ask that you give me a second chance, you know, to make things right. So, do you think we can start over?” A weak smile appeared on her lips. She replied, “I…I think that would be lovely.” “That’s good.” he stated. He then reached out his hand and said “Hi, my name’s Travis.” Nina reached out and gently grasped his hand, saying “I’m Nina, it’s a pleasure to meet you.” Travis then released her hand and sat down opposite of Nina. Nina took the opportunity to dry her tears.

Travis started the date again by asking Nina “Is there anything you wanted to know about me?” Nina pondered for a moment and then asked “Alright…well…what do you do for a living?” “Well”, he started “I’m basically a writer. I’ve written a couple of books, my latest one was a mystery novel. Unfortunately, it only really sold 100 copies, so I guess nobody really liked it. It was called The Gun Hidden in the Roses but you probably never heard of it.” Nina acquired a perplexed look on her face and then muttered “The gun hidden in the…” She gasped and a look of utter shock appeared on her face. “You mean YOU wrote that book?” Travis became confused and replied, “Well...yeah.” Nina’s eyes instantly lit up. “I loved that book!” she exclaimed. “What?” Travis inquired; he was now surprised as well as confused. She immediately picked up her purse and began rummaging through it. She pulled out a paperback version of his novel. The book’s cover and many of it pages were worn, implying it had been read many times. “I usually spend my free time reading, mostly mystery novels.” she stated. “The Gun Hidden in the Roses is my all time favorite. I must have read it a dozen times.” “Oh wow, that’s pretty cool.” Travis stated “It’s good to know at least one person liked my book.” Nina began to blush while holding the book to her chest. “I guess so. Oh…um…would it be too much to ask if I could…get your autograph?” Travis responded “Uh…sure, do you have a pen?” Nina was still blushing but there was also a huge smile on her face. She handed the worn-out tome to him and began searching through her purse again to find a pen. She quickly found a writing implement and gave it to him as well. As he signed the inside of the cover, under the author’s photograph, a geisha waitress came by and placed their meals on the table. “Here you go.” he stated as he handed the book and pen over to her. “Oh thank you so much.” she replied as she took the items back.

Travis started up the conversation again. “Alright, now it’s my turn. What do you do for a living?” “Hmmm? Oh, right, well, I don’t do anything nearly as glamorous as what you do.” she proclaimed, “I’m just a voice actress.” “That sounds pretty cool.” said Travis, “Do you lend your voice for stuff like commercials and cartoons?” “More or less.” was her response. “I mostly do commercials for the Anna-Mary insurance company; I just say the name and slogan.” Travis spoke, “So, you’re the one that does those commercials? That’s…that’s amazing! You’re practically a celebrity.” Nina began to blush again. “A…a celebrity? No, no, I’m not that famous.” Travis made his rebuttal, “Oh come on; you represent one of the biggest insurance companies in the country. Everybody’s heard your voice before, you’re an icon; and I gotta say, that’s pretty incredible.” “Oh…oh my…t-thank you.” said Nina with a very embarrassed smile. Travis picked up a pair of chopsticks and smiled, “We better start eating before the food gets cold.” “Oh, right, of course.” Nina followed suit and began eating.

While they ate, they talked about other things. Like hobbies, interests, and various other subjects. Travis eventually found out that Nina only lived a block away from Yoshikawa’s. Maybe that’s why he was supposed to meet her here. Furthermore, Travis observed that Nina chewed her food gently and that she savored every bite of her dish. He thought that to be rather interesting; with they way she talked, moved, cried, and now ate, it made him wonder if she was always that delicate with everything else. Anyway, after nearly a half hour, Nina softly placed her chopsticks down and stated, “That was delicious; I couldn’t possibly eat another bite.” Travis looked at her dish and became somewhat astounded. She only ate maybe three-fourths of the food on her plate; for someone who was starving earlier, she didn’t really eat that much. He expected her to consume more like five meals, but apparently she couldn’t even finish one. “How bizarre.” he thought. After he finished his meal and received the check, he asked Nina, “Can I walk you home?” Nina responded, “Oh yes, thank you.”
