The island the blights reside in is filled with a poisonous mire and a magic-enhancing mist known as mistyque; it sacrifices health in exchange for more powerful magic. The blights' staves are made from crystalized liquids from the mire that are already filled to the brim with untapped power. However, they tend to waste it on dark magic to kill others as opposed to trying to save themselves. It's all right though. There's little chance they can be returned to their former states anyway.
But seriously imagine being in some misty place that's already slowly killing you and then having some huge shadowy thing that sounds like a helicopter appear out of literally nowhere to murder you
