      “HELP!!”

Struggling in the deep, sucking mire, Sonic failed yet again to get loose and only succeeding in sinking deeper.  The mud was so thick that he’d stayed on top of it at first, suddenly plunging down when he’d gotten more than a few steps in nearly up to his waist.  He’d stolen a pair of old shoes a few days ago, and had been doing fairly well in foraging; enough to satisfy his hunger and help keep him full as he travelled.  While this reality was the opposite of the Prime Zone, at least the forests on Moebius had just as much to gather and eat at this time of year as Mobius did.  But that good luck he’d been having had ended halfway through crossing the swamp.  It had seemed like a good idea at first; it would cover his tracks and it was too wide to risk going around when there were searchers left miles behind him, which was still far too close for his liking.

Unfortunately the swamp had a mind of its own, sucking off his new(but very used) shoes, and filling them with so much goop he’d had to abandon them.  That hadn’t been so bad, and he could always wash his now-bare feet later.  Then he’d ended up like THIS, sinking steadily and the mud too thick to pull himself out.  The suction was too strong, and once he’d fallen in there was no getting out.  He could barely even pull his arms out after he’d tried to push himself back upwards.  At least his followers from ‘her’ compound were too far behind to hear him, because he was starting to think drowning in mud was as bad as drowning in water, the thought of which was terrifying.

Finally his cries for help had been heard, grateful to see a trio of Moebians approaching through the thick grasses and underbrush ahead of him, instead of from behind him from where he’d come. “Quick, grab this rope, we’ll have you out of there in no time!” The thin but muscular hound threw out a sturdy rope, just within his reach, and Sonic grabbed it like the literal lifeline it was.  The other two wolves, more heavily built, helped pull him in as the mud sucked at his legs and lower body, reluctant to let its prey go.  Finally they had him at the edge, only taking a few moments but that was far too long for Sonic’s liking.

But as soon as each of the larger wolves had a grip on his arms, their grasp became steely and cruel. “Ow!  Hey!!” Sonic’s heart froze as the slender wirey wolf wasted no time in whipping out a pair of manacles and slapping the tight steel around his wrists.  The worst part was that they had him trapped; he could have pulled away, but with the mire behind him it was be captured or sink to his death.  What followed was one of the bulky wolves sitting on him to keep him from running off like he had the night he’d been sold while another pair of manacles were snapped around his ankles; neither having any give between them before the wolves pulled his feet to his ankles, snapping the two sets together and essentially leaving him hogtied on the ground as they talked over their catch. “Is this the one?” “Has to be.  He matches the description.” “It’s him alright!  Enough running, slave.  You’re in for it now!” Sonic paled at those words, ears folding as he realized that his searchers a good day or more behind him must’ve called ahead...
