The black idol targets our soical instinct. Pretty much all living things have a draw towards community. We're born small and cute so that our parents are more likely to love us; we feel scrutiny when we go against social norms. Every pact animal has the natural instinct to belong to it's community.
My theory is the black idol is using this against us. It targets that phycological need to belong, as any organic life seems to be able to joining with it. It's a dark mirror, in which we can see ourselves and what we can be: a true community, closer to our peers than any other way. Belonging is a powerful emotion, it's what makes the black idol truly terrifying. And I think a psychopath, one without this need to belong, might be the kind of person best suited to combat it.

I was thinking similarly, but I don't think its community. Like with Anthony earlier in the comic, It seems the idol begins to invade a subjects mind and shows them what they want to see. Anthony had lost the love of his life, Clara, and as a result of being exposed to the Idol, the Idol showed him exactly what he wanted: his lost love. It convinced him that it was Clara after some time to the point that he wanted to release it, or from his perspective, the one thing he wanted the most. I think it just shows whatever the victim wants to see, whatever they want the most in order to get its way.
But that's just my opinion.
