The Swiss Guard is the best real world comparison I can think of. Mostly ceremonial but can put up a fight though they will probably be overwhelmed if really put too the test against a large professional force. Shining has a few similarities with WW2 legend Charles Upham. And the Womderbolts are more a display/ceremonial group as well, more paramilitary.

Well they were designed too be seen. I'm familiar with them as the guard marines at the US embassy often collect for the RSA around ANZAC Day. I do think the royal guards in MLP are most like the Swiss Guard in design though as they wear steel plate armour that is too gaudy for regular use.
